3 phase at home

ok chaps have been offered an old miller AC/DC TIG WELDER but its 3 phase and i dont have that so whats involved in gettin it installed and what sort of price cheers steve

Contact your supplier, expect to pay in excess of £1000

Normally adjacent houses are connected to each phase in turn so it should be available in your street, but it will involve digging the road up.

Do you happen to know which model it is? Some of the old Millers can be run on single phase after fiddling with a jumper on the back. I'm running a Syncrowave like that.

It may be worth having a look on the data plate on the machine as some of them can be run on single phase, it may only involve changing a couple of cables inside. It might not be possible to run the welder flat out though.

I think Malcolm and Wozzaaah have these sort of tig welders.

I'm affraid i don't know much more about them but i'm sure someone else can give you a better idea.

Most miller transformer based machines can be run off a single phase, they just need a very large cable and fuse. Have a look here for your possible machine handbook which should answer your questions.

its over 25 yrs old and deffo 3 phase only its been stuck in a corner and not used for over 10 so is gonna need a good blow out ohh and its well heavy im told

I have an Airco 300 Heliwelder A/BP, same as the Miller 330A/BP and was made in 1973. Big beast, 750 lbs and can build battleships.

Everyone seems to think they are three phase. I see most for sale listed as 3P when they are not. Only the DC-only machines may be 3P. All AC TIG machines of this era are single phase. Most can be jumpered for 200/220/380/440V operation.

Very few were made to only work on a single voltage, but all are single phase (but may be jumpered to run at a 3P voltage.)

Worth looking into depends where the cable is situated to where you want the supply. On both occasions I have had three phase installed for under £250the last being 5yrs ago. I dug the track myself for the cable to be laid.

250 quid your lucky they want an arm and a leg on teeside then theres a fair wait

l got 3 phase in about 10 years ago,l called in a couple of favours l had done for fellas in the VW club,first fella worked for the power company and told me what lampost l had to take it from,second fella worked for a company thats contracted to power company to dig the trenches,he dug the trench and layed the condut,first fella came and put cable in from lampost to garage and on to a board then he told me l had to apply in writting for it to get hooked up or l would get the jail for touching it,then the power company came out and put a meter in and took it from there,there was a bit more to it than that the second fella seen someone at the power company,to watch for my letter and the job was sorted,but l was told it would have been £1500-£2000,haha l dont know where that price came from because its a lot of money for what it was,saying that the lampost was about 50 meters away.

everythings privatised now not subsidised so there out to make as much as possible .the supply company and the metering co

u can if u have the 3phase suply into your premises have u got a single cutout fuse on suply. or is there 3 fuses in the cutout suply???if theres 3 your laughing

If you can't get the set you have to work on single phase, it's not worth getting three phase installed just to run an old obsolete set. Look for something that is single phase.

Hello Sam,

it very much depends on circumstances.

We have just had a quote for a single phase supply (20KVA), a shade over £400 plus VAT, and that's with a pole about 5 metres from the building. Three phase quote was about £8,000 as they said they needed to upgrade the transformer if we wanted the three phase.

Three years ago we built an extension to our pad, the old power supply had to be removed & a temporary supply laid on while building took place. I asked if the new supply could be three phase & EDF said no problem. It cost £100 more than a new single phase supply £487 in total (at the time).
It is always worth scouting around for a utilities crew (Electric or gas) & asking if they are doing any private work for cash like, In our case we couldnt do this as it meant swopping meters & this had to be legit. But its lovely having all that power!

i work for edf energy as a cable jointer and it has to be done propper these days, u need a mpan number so u can get a meter fitted....if u dont get this you will get caught for a illegal supply and it will be cut of and a big bill on your mat a typical single phase is around 700 at the mo and a 3 phase arround 1200 but varies quite a bit from job to job

you wouldn't believe how many illegal supplys we are currently cutting off each month just in my area..... its quite frighting how many people mess with the cables in the road to save a few quid

i caught one out fiddling landlords meter he took out the outgoing mains tails and joined them up with incomers trouble was when he reconected he got them the wrong way round and there was a neutral to earth fault on. needless to say his face was blackened and one blew up meter
