3/4 drive what size to keep

As you may know Winchboy collects vintage Britool.
He bought a 3/4 set when it arrived some of the bits are not Britool despite being told it was all Britool so he wasn't happy but the bank of dad saved the day as I found a box of 3/4 drive stuff locally to replace the incorrect bits in his set but as the bloke wouldn't split it he now has some extras so should he keep them?

2.1/4 AF?
His Britool vintage set goes up to 2" AF & 1.1/4 whit.
He has a couple of metrics he is keeping but wonders how big to go, he wants a defender but possibly a military truck when older.

My 3/4 set goes up to 58mm I think, biggest I’ve needed was the 56 but you never know

Keep them all. It’s not easy stuff to come by the proper vintage britool stuff. Having spares is a blessing. Especially that stuff. Some times you need two sockets of the same size as well.eg Nuts and bolts

No brand loyalty in my tool chest but I do have duplicates a plenty. Always good to have more than one of each size.

He has to draw the line somewhere many of the duplicates are not Britools some unbranded some Snap on

The snap ons and unbranded sockets are easy enough to come by again at the same quality level I suppose if he needs to recover some of the cost back. Snap on 3/4 sockets are worth good money.
I wouldn’t be selling any of the vintage britool stuff mind. No way. That stuff not only was excellent but it comes round once in an eclipse. When it does come round it’s never in the sizes you want.

I wouldn't get rid of any of the really big ones, may never use them, but may need them for a hub nut or something, sometime in the future & he'll be stuck without it. I wouldn't keep duplicates of the real big ones though.

Thats why he bought the 3/4 set as I have only seen one for sale in the past, it looks to have all the AF and Whit in it, some spares and a couple of metrics, the box does have room for a row of metrics as there is space in the compartment for the Ratchet etc.
He has one metric 34mm Britool 3/4 so will just keep an eye out for the rest.

He was offered one!
It was cheap too but he felt it was too big and would be almost impossible to find the missing sockets, the 3/4 one weighs 35KG

Weight isn't an issue when you have a good workshop floor and wheels on the tool box. My biggest issue with the sets is there are so many overlaps between 1/2 and 3/4 sets, your buying things you don't actually need. same when you go 3/4 to inch. but sadly its cheaper to buy a set than separates.

Tell me about it, I needed a 2 large sockets a while back it. It was cheaper to buy a set from 32-60 than the two I required

You buy them off him and sell them back or hire them to him when he needs them.

Sell the SO ones if he favors Britool but keep the unbranded, good to have some you don't love that can be hammered onto rusty nuts or have their OD reduced to fit a narrow bore.

Sockets always come in handy even if to make something else with a drive on it,

We have a socket welded to the centre of a clutch plate for checking gearboxes.

If you don't have too sell them then I would put them in a socket box for as and when needed.

Keep them, add to them. If may find better, so he can trade or swop.
The good thing about old tools is they last.

He has decided to sell the spare Britool ( keeping the best condition ones) and the assortment of random unbranded ones, he can then look to buy more Britool for the collection, I bought him a small 3mm Britool spanner today!

The biggest winchboy will need on a defender is 52mm for the big nuts on the hub bearings, anything truckish could possibly need 4" plus (and odd sided) which is normally box spanner territory.

He has a 3.3" box spanner looks like an immersion heater one but more robust?
