2k acrylic clear over 2k acrylic solid colour, possible?

As the subject line says....

Is it possible to use a 2k acrylic clear coat over the top of a 2k acrylic solid colour? if so, are there any particular steps I should take ie, how long should I wait for the solid colour to dry? should I key the solid colour? if so, what grade of wet & dry should I use? etc Many Thanks

yes you can do it but why ? if you dont do it when you put on the solid you will have to flat the whole thing down to apply it.

and if you wanted to use clear why not use base coat instead of solid

no problem doing it. intrigued why. Let the solid cure as you would normally for de nibbing and mopping then flat 6-800 wet and clear.

The job in question are a few carbon fibre parts, after making these parts I always clear coat them with 2k acrylic to help with UV protection. But with these specific parts I want to paint a section of the parts but leave the rest showing the carbon, I already have the 2k paint in the colour I need so I was hoping to use that instead of having to buy some basecoat.

Hmmmm.... perhaps I better do it in basecoat then. I've never used it before, is it any easier/harder to use?

no its simple, its easier if anything because you are not going for a shine just dust it on wait for it to go off and laquer

As Snooper said basecoat will give you an easier edge to lose.

As snooper and Langy rightly say. Its what the likes of Nubby and the custom painters do and they then 'bury the colour coats in the clear, and colour sand (american) flat and mop (english) You can also get a fine edge masking tape to more reduce the hard edge between colours.
