2cv rebuild!

Well the sale of my 110 landrover due to its drinking problem has completed and I'm now left with a camper van that's road worthy as the lightweight is still in bits as well! Had a 2cv as first car and loved it so time for a second. After a morning of working around the rain I'm left with this

It is safer you take it all to bits! It had a new chassis in 2002 at total 2cv according to the label attaced

Convert it into an Africar and you can get rid of the L/W as well!

Looks fun! Like the look of the mehari does anyone know if a dolly can be converted? Biting the bullet and getting new sills at the same time as the old ones are a bit bent and rotten at the end. I bet the inside will be less than pretty

The africar tho developed using a 2cv had nothing in common by the end

Suspension was leading arm but used Moulton hydralastic interlinked suspension GS 4pot engine the prototypes that did the trip from artic to tropic had 2cv gearboxes as the dedicated 4x4 system was a catastrophe the boxes burst apart at regular intervals hardly surprising as they just manage to hold together with the 602cc 2cv add an engine with much more torque and they really suffer.

Mehari would be a pretty easy swap once you chopped the last foot of the rear chassis longerons but a Mehari kitty litter tray aint cheap now

That looks fun how is the sill welded to the rear bit? The c pillar looks to be spot welded with a couple of short welds as well does that sound correct?

there is a tongue that goes over the front of the c pillar the rest should butt to the c pillar and be seamed - the inner edge can ether be done by opening the closing panel under the seat box or cutting an access from the front and welding it closed again

best course of action for the sills is to slit them at the centre kink ( the repair come with the bend but often miss the kick up ) get the back tight and lift the front to fit in the a pillar. Fit the rear doors to get B alignment. tack it all up remove the door and seam the saddle at the b pillar seam the bottom of the A pillar -do the C

the Belgians have a race serese which has 3 classes of 2cv the top is the "prototype" using the BMW engine the trouble is the engine is that heavy and sits so far forward that corners become a bit of a problem we can usually get one of our 2cv engined cars to run rings round them in the corners

here are some of the pictures from Joolz's blog about fitting a BMW oilhead
adaptor plate cant remember how he did the flywheel but he is a pretty skilled eingineer made the adaptor plate by fitting pointed studs to the engine then hammering it in to the plate to mark it - my kind of eingineer!

needs a 4pot citroen gearbox 2cv one too fragile

rear engine mount adapted to the new gearbox

front mount cahssis cross member needs altering for clearance

how it fits.


the original gearbox couldnt handle it so a GS type box was fitted the last 2 photos just to show off Joolz's welding skills - new gearbox mount uses Transit engine mounts IIRC.

i bet they fly with a better engine in them.

some years back my dads mate bought one that was running rough he drove it for months only getting 45mph max, turned out one of the conrods had sheered but it still trundled on with one cylinder!!!!!
