29107 epoxy primer

Having read on here that Lechler epoxy primer doesn't contain isocyanates, I was a little alarmed to find when I had some delivered that the label says it does. I emailed paints4u and they admit they've put the label on themselves as a general safety warning. It doesn't however actually contain isocyanates. Make of that as you will.

My question here is what preparation is needed before spraying. I aim to sand and grind the metal as rust free as possible, but I know that at the microscopic level it will be still be full of gigantic gouges of oxide. Is it better to try and treat this with a phosphating product such as Metal Ready, then epoxy this, or just spray the cleaned up metal?

I have used the lechler epoxy and the por15 metal ready, as a test i painted some parts, but before painting them i sprayed some metal ready on them, let it dry, then i thoroughly cleaned the parts down with panel wipe(no water) and then sprayed the epoxy. My result was that the epoxy primer adhered far better to the parts that i used the metal ready on than the parts that i just used 80 grit on, also this should eliminate any microscopic rust. I must say that it does say on the instructions that the metal ready should be washed off with water before applying paint, the reason i did the test was because i have sandblasted some panels which i could not paint the same day, so immediately after blasting i just sprayed some metal ready on to stop any rust forming,, the parts are still in bare metal now after 6 months! but still have zero rust on them(metal ready is good). I wanted to find out if i could just wash the sandblasted panels down with panel wipe(not water) and then epoxy prime them, as washing with water would cause them to rust again! i sprayed the test parts about 5 months ago and they are still good, no lifting on the paint,etc... so from now on i will probably use metal ready on all panels i take to bare metal because for one it means you can let the panel sit in bare metal without rusting and two it makes the paint stick better I think the trick is if your not washing it down with water before painting, make sure you clean thoroughly with panel wipe before painting, get one of those pressure spray bottles to spray the panel wipe on.

Good Morning,

we send you the safety data sheets of the products: 29107,29370, 00516.

These products don’t contain any isocyanates.

OK I'm about ready to do the primer but I've never used this product before. I'm going to do some experimenting on an old panel before the real thing, but before even that so I don't waste too much (I've only got 1 litre of primer) can anybody answer the following:

1. I see when mixed it's got a pot life of 4 hours but at what stage will I be able to put the next coat on. It says it's dust free in 15-20 minutes - can the next coat go on then?

2. How critical is the temperature? I imagine it's going to harden and dry slower. I've done regular primer at 13° OK. Right now I think it will be difficult to heat my garage above 16°.

3. Are there any critical issues with cleaning the gun out?

Just use gunwash as usual.

remember its more panel temps than air temp , when its really cold you can heat the room but the panels will stay ice cold for ages , until they catch up they can have a film of condensation on them

once the room is getting warm , point a heat lamp at each panel to help it warm

I also use por-15 metal ready before epoxy primer and clean it off with panel wipe. But if you are using the POR-15 top coat then I would use water as I don't know whether there would be any problems and POR-15 also goes onto rusty metal.

As said above use gunwash but make sure it's thoroughly cleaned.
