27ton truck recomendations?

The place I was working at had a merc wagon and drag to carry 8 race cars

they got there operating licence in a month and

the merc gear selector went kaput and for them to sort it was over £800 other than that it was really reliable just old and a temperamental air bag switch

Dafs are ok and drive well although I do prefer trucks than bend in the middle,I bought one mainly for the crane to move things about between yards. Older ones are pretty basic and reasonably cheap to maintain, the one I got has the eminox reduced pollution exhaust which also knocks down the road tax. Bought a 24v code reader which helps sort through any problems.

if you have trouble with the O licence get your MP on board, they can probably push some buttons for the food industry in the current situation, in fact get in contact with him / her now, or Boris,

Good advice there - I had an ongoing problem with DVSA a few years ago over trade plates; called our local MP, explained DVSA were preventing me from employing people as drivers, upshot was a face to face with the regional director inside three days and more plates than you could shake a stick at.

Need deep pockets for a merc, MAN don’t get the best reputation either. Get what you pay for with a DAF, interiors can be a bit Tupperware but they seem to just keep going. Look at the amount of 45s getting their heads kicked in by scaffolders on the daily

looks like deleted posts have made whatever happen disappear so I don't really know what's going on

but as above I've liked reading your posts

I've felt the same about this place a few times... maybe take a break for a couple of weeks first?

I keep coming back because there's a few (well, more then a few really) very nice, very smart people here... it's worth ignoring the silly people/stuff to stick around and read their posts


I have a friend in real life who'll argue he's right till he's blue in the face, even if he has no idea what he's talking about - he's not arguing because he thinks he's right, he's arguing because he wants to be right / want's to 'win'.... an hour later he'll come back and say, "now I've thought about it, you were right"... and he's shocked that I'd give up because I don't want to argue anymore

I think there's a few people like that here (minus the admitting they were wrong).... better to just ignore them and get on with it

I don't know anything about trucks but my mate in the machinery moving business is all daf, stretched tractor units with big hiabs. They seem to go on and on...

Actually all I know about trucks is that I have a Leyland EA van in the barn on 6ton FG axles, with a commer knocker under the floor. That one day I should restore.

I would never delete a valuable member's account if they asked without giving them time to think it over and confirm if that's really what they want.
Sometimes just a little time away from the forum can make people change their mind.

Regards this thread, my thoughts have been voiced by others. I admit to having driven most things with wheels, (and one or two without ), but I honestly think there aren't really any bad lorries out there today, just some are better than others. And a lot of it is down to the way it's looked after, a useless "driver" will happily trash the most expensive well spec'ed motor there is... I'm still ironing out problems with my elderly DAF that were caused by the 2 previous "drivers" not giving a monkeys wotsit about it.

I agree with others about DAF's, they do what they should without any fuss. I never took to the CF cab, like the one in @8ob 's first picture. It just doesn't work for me, so I prefer the XF cab. Scanias do just the same job but cost a lot more, but they do hold their resale value though. I have a soft spot for Mercedes after driving a 26ton rigid Axxor for 2 years. Had it from new and all it ever needed was a water pump. The only downside of it was the cab isn't really big enough for spending a week away in, although I was regularly away 2 or 3 weeks at a time in it.

It really is horses for courses.

Biggest thing I've driven was a 7.5 ton box van, hired to do a flitting. I was surprised at how quickly I adjusted to its 'bulk'.

One of our partners runs a fleet of Scanias - the drivers hate the new ones - fight over the oldest on the fleet. One of the mechanics told me their old S reg did 3 million miles and the head never had to come off even once. It is now in his fishing boat! They definitely don't build them like that any more.
