Hello MJS,
there are a huge variety of transformer configurations. Don't get an auto transformer, by the way. Input 230 simply line and neutral to either terminal, polarity is not relevant. Secondary again polarity is irrelevant. VA is simply the size and is voltage times current, if a physically identical transformer with a higher VA is available, there will not really be any problem using it, just don't go smaller.
The other common option is with a multiple out put, e.g. 0. 6. 12. three terminals, just connect to 0 and 12 (sometimes 6.0.6 in which case connect to 6 and 6.

are there any fuses on the PCB?
Failing that it's a check from the supply through the switch etc. Have you access to a meter to check through things?
