Hi all. I have a grinder here that I use to sharpen grass cutting units. The motors have 400/240 volts on the identification plate. What does this mean? My new workshop doesn't have three phase so I'm looking for ways to run single phase. Thanks
In star pattern, each phase is separated from each of the other two by a pair of windings whereas in Delta each phase is separated from the others by only one.
I think, in laymans terms, it means that the unit can run off either a 240v 3phase supply or a 415v 3 phase supply. To run it off a 240v single phase supply you would need to invest in an inverter to take in the 240v single phase and output the 3 phase the motor requires. Or you could replace the motor with a single phase unit which, I suppose, would be impractical.

Manufacturers can build a dual voltage motor into their machine and this will be compatible with voltages in many countries other than the UK with differing 3 phase voltages,
