20K Gates “recovered” after 17 years

A set of gates stolen from a museum in Sheffield 17 years ago have surfaced in Derbyshire. Each gate weighs one ton.

I completed my drive gates last September. It took three men to lift them on to the 3 hinges on each post. I assumed mine would b safe due to the weight. I am now thinking that I should make mine more secure. Like the saying goes, “if it’s not nailed down…..”

I remember those disappearing - I went past on the bus the day after and there was Police tape accross the entranceway.

there hardly a set of gates u could put on your property without anyone noticing round our way the hinges on any decent gates are welded over as fair few have been lifted

We also remember them going, a freind of ours walked thro them on her way back from work - folowing morning they were gone but she asumed they were being referbished.

The owner had acquired them from a business colleague. Police were notified of the discovery and they were content to put the matter in the hands of the council, which is just pleased to have them back.

How come the police are not pursuing the theft of £20,000 of public property ???

Any one remember them stealing the wall on Saville st around 15yrs ago, we used to pass them every day for mths & see them dismantling & cleaning the engineering bricks then loading them on pallets, a slick operation. It was about 8/10' high x 1/4mile long.

Sadly it's over 17 years ago and with current funding being limited I dare say it's a case of "not enough money" and as the gates have been found it's a happy ending so to speak...

I walked through there heading to the museum about 12 to 13 years ago whilst waiting to attend an interview at the Sheffield University Chemistry building next door, I always thought the gates looked odd...

Was the wall on the left as you went out of town? IIRC there was derelict land behind it. Opposite Tommy Wards?

Didn't realise it had been nicked! Puts the odd stone out of a dry-stone wall into perspective.

Someone nicked some sandstone paving slabs from the garden path of my last house just after I sold it (no, not me).

Theres a lot of them going missing here lately, listening to Joe Duffy on the radio the other day and theres a lot of metal theft going on. One woman came home to find her hot water cylinder was gone from inside the house.

were doing OK this year so far but last year we had 5KM of copper overhead cabling nicked off site pity it wasn't on at the time 26KV DC

I can remember these going missing , what amazed me and still does is that the gates were situated directly across from a busy junction , within site of Sheffield Childrens Hospital A+E Dept entrance . open 24hrs and generally in a busy area.... Cheek or what.

Would be good to see them back on , i thought the bobbies would have them straight back , like they do when you buy a previously stolen vehicle without knowing ??

I have some pics of some guys that tried to nick live cables.

There wasnt much of them left to put in a box.

I worked on security at Lin-Din (the Linthorpe-Dinsdale oilrig building yard on the Tees) back in the 80s: someone 'nicked' the yard gates from under our noses one weekend. We'd all gone out on patrols round the yard, got back to the gatehouse and sometime later someone said "What's different out here?". Took us a while to realise the gates weren't there. Cue mad panic, rang up site contact who wasn't best impressed to be dragged off his golf course, he pointed out that they'd been collected for shotblast and repaint.
No one told us...
