Apologies for long post!
Old “shed” of a van got 205000 on (I’ve had about 8 years and 50k in my use). It’s a Renault 1.9 Dci80 turbo (F9Q series engine also sold as Renault master and Vauxhall Movano, I think)
I also have had some previous issues as bought from friend mechanic (Glow plug light was always on, occasional no throttle response at all until key off/on) alternator later seized, replaced and new battery and both problems seemed to go away.
Only hobby use for transporting materials so not used regularly been reliable other than alternator, battery and gearbox going bang! And lots of diesel)
Recent short trip injector light came on and went off with no seeming symptoms. Always starts in a few revs but glow plug light only on for few seconds.
When checking out charging system for alternator issue few years ago, I noticed 80-amp draw (assuming glow plugs) until engine temp up to normal (depending on outside temperature)
Noticed next trip out it seemed sluggish to rev at standstill but as revs did slowly increase at about 2000 it revved freely to 4000 (noticed clutch down drops to 3000) and tick over bit lumpy. This didn’t seem to change with slowly pressing throttle or planting it.
On the road sluggish throttle response until 2000 then “normal” but change up a gear and revs drop back to snail.
As I didn’t want to spend a lot of money,(any!!) I thought it was overdue a fuel filter so replaced it and dumped injector cleaner in ¼ tank of fuel. Old filter was prob 50000 old and bit black but no debris in bowl. After fun with priming (in tank lift pump but bleed valve leak first time), it seemed to tick over better but still bad throttle. No excess smoke on start up or driving.
Decided to check EGR as easy to get to. Removed and not very dirty at all check open close with 12 volt and pot values (Pierberg data sheet) replaced – no change.
Cleaned MAFF with contact clean (looked ok) let dry - no change to throttle.
Checked vacuum turbo actuator by applying vacuum direct – it moved and returned,
Connected my Topdon Artidiag 800BT - tricky as auto vin didn’t work so had to select by vehicle. Saw a few readings but didn’t seem to scan for fault codes - maybe it’s a bit early for full data or picked wrong variant?
SO took it for MOT and it passed no advisories but my friendly tester did concur with poor low rev power!!
Common issue on Renault/Vauxhall/Nissan forum lots of ideas there but no fixes!
I will try topdon again when have time but not keen to use it with the snail power delivery.
Did wonder about trying cheapo MAFF as a change in fault would be a clue?
No way it’s getting injectors or turbo as I only paid £900 8 years ago so will be scrapped due to increasing Road fund if can’t fix as selling with faults may be a minefield!
Think I'll check for glow plug current but unsure where controller/relay is?
Temperature gauge seems as always but wonder if there is a seperate ECU temperature sensor?
Any ideas?
