Daughter’s boyfriend, has this old Polo, it makes a lot of noise from what sounds like the front end. Speed related, it increases with speed, and dropping into neutral at speed makes no difference to the sound. I’d like to say it’s a wheel bearing, but it’s not the sort of steady rumbling rough sound I’d expect, but seems to pulse slightly.
I had it jacked up, spun all the wheels, none feel rough at all, but drivers side front makes a little bit of a slight noise when spun by hand, very faint though.
Could it be a driveshaft, CV joint, or whatever else is in the front drive train?
He is only 21, works full time, but on the usual minimum salary, so throwing the car onto the mercy of a garage is not something he wants to really do unless absolutely necessary.
What sort of coin would a new front wheel bearing cost, just to get an idea?
