20 ltr bottle will last me how long ?

I know this maybe a silly question.guess its a case of how long a piece of string ha.
Im trying to weigh up best deal for gas for me.rent or deposit.
Im a hobby welder. So not using it that much.just building log burners fire pits is my plan at mo. So no massive projects.
What time scale you rekon ill get with a 20 ltr gas bottle with my mig welder.

I can get a 20 ltr bottle for 100 pounds.no deposit or rental through a mate. Cant firgure if this expensive. My figures say not if it last me a year compared to rent fees over a year etc.

Just hoping some of you can tell me how long your bottles last as a small usage welder.

It's easy enough to work out if you know the fill pressure of your bottle. BOC bottles are filled to 230bar I think so for 20 litres at 230bar = 4600litres of gas. The usual rate is 10litres per min. So that would give you 460 minutes or 7 1/2 hours minus some for losses etc.

Its 100 pound per bottle. Obviously if i use more than one bottle a year.its expensive .
Sgs gas is 80 pound for refill and a big deposit i don't get back till i done with the bottle. And price of renting and gas purchase is similar over a year. If i done my maths right hehe..

Plus by getting the bottle at 100 pound. I can get some steel for free. Not alot but it adds up to saving money of the cost of the bottle.if that makes sense

One i can get is 230 bar

i pay around 33 ish a fill on a 20 litre 230 bar bottle with boc...about 5 quid a month rental

I put all the numbers into a spread sheet ages ago. On first glance, it seems like the rent free are cheap, but, i think the break even point, when i did the numbers, was one bottle every year and a half.

Ie if you refilled more often than 18months, then boc was cheaper, if less often, the rent free was cheaper.

I went with boc, and used the first bottle within about 4 months....

Do the numbers yourself though - its not hard sums, and then you will have your answer.

Something else you may need to consider is how far you have to go to get it.

The BOC agent I use is about 4 miles away - the closest 'rent-free' place I know of is almost 20. Bumps my break-even about a bit

Yea its local to me. I guess its just hard to say exactly how much i would use.just like Julian said. He did the sums but used a bottle in 4 months

If you haven't already got one get yourself a cheap peashooter gauge. It's handy to set exactly the right amount of gas so you aren't wasting any. In my experience 90% of the time is spent on preparation and only 10% actually welding so a bottle tends to last me a long time...
