2 Tone & Pin Striping.

As most of you know I am half way through my paint on my bike, it is all going well so far but before I get to a certain stage I want to ask a couple of basic questions. Sure this one will be for Snooper & Langly.

The Job:

Paint on one panel two different colour as in like two tone, main colour White and another area Black.

Questions?

I have seen and also read about paint bleeding through the masking tape, or even when the tape is removed the line not being sharp ( hope that makes sense )

If I do a 2 Tone and the above does happen, I have seen watching "Biker Build" off doing flames they pinstripe, would this be an option pinstriping around the lines.

If so with pinstriping then can I use the Celly I have for doing this, what would be the mix 1:1.

Any other hints or tip would be great.

In the old days of my BSA and Triumph rebuilds I used to celly spray the 2 colours on, flatten back, polish up then use pinstripe tape, if you get the top quality tape it's a lot thinner than the usual car shop stuff, applied when everything is slightly warm, it made a great job and you had to be real close to realise it's actually tape and not painted lines.

Iffy lines from masking is usually down to dodgy tape. Don't use the paper tape, use the 3M stuff as you have already got.
Pinstriping is an option and does look the business, but don't underestimate how difficult it is to do. You may have a natural flair for it but in my experience most people severely struggle and give up. Celly paint should be fine for striping, just thin it the bare minimum to get it to flow from the brush, maybe 10-20% thinner. As always, have a practice on scrap first and find what feels right for you.

3M 417 blue tape is great, or 471+ if you can find it. I've got that greeny one as well, and have taped curved pistripes for spraying with it, but the blue tape sticks better in tighter curves/lays flat well.
Be patient adding coats, to get less build up at the tape edges.

I used to buy pinstriping tape, it was translucent plastic and stretched to do curves

You would lay it on over both colours with a printed tracer line on the join then pull a top layer off and the centre wouls peel out leaving 2 bits of parallel masking tape.

All you had to do was fill in the gap and pull the tape off.

as chipper has stated you need the right stuff and ive just re read your post and see you have the right stuf,f if you want a really good job then you would paint using the lightest colour first then apply your masking add your second colour but only enough to cover evenly as you dont want to build up an edge along the masking, remove the masking and if all is well laquer it to protect it especially the thin second colour depending how good you are you will be able to lose the edge by building up the laquer

I preferred the TEX tape to the 3M tape, I thought it stretched/conformed better.
I masked and painted stripes, it's easy enough. I did try striping brushes and didn't really get on with them, I practiced a lot when I first got a brush but only tried it out on panels a couple of times; maybe I would have got better at it? I was trying it with enamel.
I have some pics of a GSX tank, they should show the masking and stuff. I am to tight to buy striping tape;-) I masked the tank and blew the stripe in with basecoat. The pic shows the double stripe and I have started to pull the dividing masking off. When it was striped and lettered it was sprayed with clear.

The blue seems fine in the bends, the green doesn't stick so well I thought, like in these corners the green wrinkled but the blue sat down. going to look up that Tex tape though

And while we're on tapes, a shout for Jammydog tapes, go down to 1mm, so you can pull trad mini flames..

Thanks guy's that has got my mind clear if I do patch work ( 2 Tone ) Just bought a set of Artist brushes, only cheep ones but a full range from the Range, lol.

Been Colour sanding the panels today, 1500g. Three dots of imperfections, as in a dot like ( . )

Not sure how to tell how much colour sanding is needed, it is smooth but in a shadow you can see slight shiny dots / ripples. Not sure if this is enough because it will be clear coated after.

It needs to be uniformly dull. That will show that there are no high or low spots and it is as flat as it can be.
Another trick is to sheet it with water and look at a reflection of something straight in the water. The straighter the reflection looks, the flatter the paint work is.
