looks a bit suspect to me...the legs aren't ridgidly fixed or braced and at the elavated position, scary. I wouldn't get under it if they made let alone if I did.
Ive seen a few gadgets for lifting bikes that work abit like a big scizzor (sp) jack - I even saw a big one for cars. I look at them and think of deck chairs colapsing
to be squished by a heavy thing would so unpleasant for my wife to have to find 
I like the idea someone had to string them up. I'd just use them webbing straps with ratcheting thingys. 2 on each bike, 1 front of the frame one at the back. They never just snap - they fray slowly so you know if they are failing cos they fail slowly compared to rope or cable or chain

They look like 'Jackall' style high-lifts, and yes they are used a lot around farms. Also used a lot in the world of off-road driving (every Landrover should have one!), and are usually very reliable if you avoid the cheapies. Not trying to sell one or anything, but those jacks work both ways so can also be used as a press or a winch, and can't (shouldn't) slip unless very worn or very overloaded.
The idea of that lift looks simple enough, but I bet it takes a while to get to working height if you are working alone. You have to jack up each corner a bit at a time, so would have to walk around the thing a dozen or so times. Still, for the price it's a usefull bit of kit, and even better if you make it yourself

I'd look at a slight re-design too...
possibly have some tie-bars clamped to the middle of the spreaders front and rear and when up to 'height' they'd bolt onto the legs to make it a bit more stable. Also maybe several holes in these for different heights, or different length stabilisers?
It's a good starting point to make something decent but I also can't see it being a quick bit of kit to use. Not for day to day work...car restoration or longer jobs where the car needs to be raised and stay there for a while.
And it'd probably not be that hard to fit four motors and screws to raise it all in one go...
