Sure I have seen very tall axle stands (5ft+) used (made up) for support. May have been on YT southmain auto channel.

You need to torque the fastener to the correct torque not over tight and stretch the fixing in this situation.Respectfully I’d say it’s common sense to not pull down hard on a fastener on a 2 post lift which will set up a rocking motion.
These lifts are used almost exclusively in many garages and are perfectly safe if used with consideration to the off centre balance if removing a tight bolt at the front or rear. A 4 post in a domestic garage is likely to be too large for most.
is that post to my idea Gaz? winches are dam good, braked and reliable nowadays.i wouldnt be using those with just a winch one ton of car coming back down your not going to survive it

alternatives to a 2/4 post lift
im getting really fed up of working on cars on my back...i dont mind working on cars, i quite enjoy it most of the time, i just dont want to be on my back all the time when doing jobs under cars... so what is out there that allows us to work on the underside of cars, without having to drain...www.mig-welding.co.uk
what size pad for a 2 post would you say. i am thinking 4 foot x 3 foot x 8inch deep for each psot.I favour timber/steel templates set into the wet concrete with bent studding in place, take your time and you get a perfectly flat/level pad under the lift base ready for the columns.

For £650.00 delivered, I'd be off down the local steel supplier to buy the material and build one...i mite swell get one of these lol.

Drive up and they tilt level if you drive far enough. Reverse up and they don't tilt. Great for jet wash. Put a scaffold board accross for extra jack. No power and they live outside in the rain fully double dip galvanised.www.ebay.co.uk
