1mm mild steel sheet

Hi people,
I seem to be using mainly 1mm mild steel sheet for what I am making, at the moment I am relying on a local fabrication shop who kindly let me have off cuts, I was thinking if it would be better to order a whole sheet, say cut into thirds for ease of storage handling, so what should I be looking at paying per say a 1 off sheet?, do they come as 8x4"? thanks Chris

You'd probably better to get the same place to order you a sheet, you'll probably get a better deal and won't have to pay for delivery. Most likely they will cut it into managable pieces for you too.

Chris, give Alexanders in stirling a call, i know its no where near you, but they will give you a quote and their prices are the cheapest iv ever come across, and i use it as a guide so i dont get ripped off if i do have to buy else where if away from home!

Just ask them to quote you for 1.0mm mild steel sheet and they will tell you what sizes it comes in!

It's normally 0.9mm for some reason, I get it from Charlie Watts in Rugby for about £11 a sheet of 1.2 by 2.4, or in real money, 8 by 4. They do charge a fiver to cut it in half though. If you can manage halves instead of thirds its better, as its a whole lot easier to make a bit bit small than a small bit big!

Right. And of course the 1.2 by 2.4 isn't really 1.2 by 2.4 either generally, its a little more ((I forget exactly), and surprise surprise, it comes out at 8 by 4!

Standard sheet/plate sizes are 1000x2000, 1220x2440, 1250x2500, 1500x3000, 3660x1830, 4000x2000, 5000x2500, 6000x2500, 8000x2000, 10000x2500, 9000x3000, 7500x3000.

Thin stuff generally available in the first 4 sizes; the big plates are only available in the thicker stuff from 15mm upwards. Some is decoiled/mill sheared to order.

Sheet like that would be either a 2000x1000 or 2500x1250. May even find it in 3000x1500 from some places.

I have to say I've never taken that much notice, I ask for 8x4 and accept 2500x1250 or whatever, as long as its big and the right thickness!

Hot rolled sheet/plate is normally well over sized, cold reduced, zintec, ally, stainless is all normally a bit closer.

Yeah. cold rolled is much nicer to work with. It't the only thing we use up to 3mm. Then we buy HR4 P&O. Just ask for a sheet of 1.0mm CR4.

We pay about a £5 a sheet too. But we buy a pallet at a time of about 90 sheets. Uptonsteel is the cheapest for large quantities.
