160en turbo minor fault??

i have just picked up this 160en turbo

when i first turned it on i noticed the fan not running so i opened it up and freed off the motor it now runs, but the bloke i got it off had concerns about the welding being naff like it had a bad earth, now the earth clamp is the original naff one and it has been hot as the plastic coating has deteriorated, also where the lead that goes to the torch connects to inside the welder has the same melted deterioration

has anyone had similar results?

and what sort of cash should i bid on this machine bearing in mind im looking at a full torch kit rather than just replacing the cables, iv had clarke before and it was spot on but when i parted from my buisness partner i left him with the clarke 110turbo and took the snap-on 130

have found the main fault on this machine, one of the ally plates in the rectifier both of the diodes have come adrift of the solder joint, have tried to re solder but it wont take,does anyone know? are these available in singles or would i have to buy a complete rectifier? also has anyone got an overhead foto of the rectifier, i took one before dismanteling but the camera didnt save it,, was gunna post pic on here but cant grrrr

Usually if one of the rectifier shorts, it will damage the others. Weldequip should have the rectifier assembly.

i have pm'd steve ill see how much one is before i decide if im gunna pay my mate for the mig or just scrap it,, it seems a shame to scrap tho as it worked fine before and isnt all that old really in terms of usage, just not been looked after

It does sound like one or more of the diodes has shorted. That would account for the solder joints melting and opening up. You can test the diodes individually with a meter ( if an electronic one - DVM - use the "Diode Test" position ), or with a battery & bulb. Each diode should pass current through it in one direction and block it when you reverse the connections at the diode. If you do end up with four working diodes, it should be possible to work out how to reassemble the diodes and plates, if you post detailed pictures of what you've got and the original connections around it.

ill get the test meter out later and take fotos, but there are 4 plates each with 2 diodes per plate so will still need to buy at least 1 plate, so im thinking if i get the full rectifier and keep my good plates as spares for possible future repairs

A bridge rectifier only needs 4 diodes, so these 8 must be in pairs - to share the current between two small diodes.

bin having a david bailey time lol here are some photos of the mig during testing of the diodes,, only one diode was open circuit so i have removed it,, welder works but i suspect not to full potential

Really need to get a new rectifier module, usually if one diode fails, others are ready to fail.

i am awaiting prices at the mo,, this is a mates mig and im weighing up the option of buying it,, once i have the price ill go see him and see what he wants to do,, ither pay me for fixing it or knock price of repair off what he wants for it, im looking at upgrading ither way, i have my eyes on the Parweld XTM171C from weldequip once i have saved up a little, times are hard at the mo lol
