Reminds me about when I was young (late 1960's/ early 70's) and the sky went black - formation of B52 flying overhead. Probably on the way to Vietnam as war was still in full swing back then.

I remember driving a Transit (full of canned fish and nappies as it happens) south on the M6. I was fairly conscious of a droning noise which I assumed was just drumming because I'd dropped the first load at Carlisle and everything felt fine with the van and no nasty lights or readings from the gauges. But it was getting louder..... I then clocked that a rough looking Maestro van was gaining on me and had started to overtake so I guessed he maybe had a particularly loud exhaust (or it had fallen off). As he pulled level though I could see the driver looking around and he obviously wasn't happy with something - and the noise just didn't seem to be coming from him.
Then it went dark.
A Hercules had obviously taken off somewhere near and was following the line of the motorway as he was climbing. His ground speed wasn't much more than ours so he was only passing overhead fairly slowly hence the slowly increasing drone as he gained and finally passed us.
I got a very good look at the bottom of it until the point where the M6 turns to follow the side of the hill and the plane carried straight on. Fairly sure it was the part from Tebay heading South.

Any idea where this was filmed?
As far as airworthy numbers go, I understand that due to the deep pockets and technical expertise of some enthusiasts there are more flying now than twenty years ago - and a few more undergoing restoration.

I'm sure there were 22 on the flightline at Duxford in 2000 for the Battle Of Britain 60th, 20 flying in formation. Overflew the crowd in the Big Wing and the bloody things were everywhere when they broke formation, you didn't know where to look! The Balboa at the end of that day was incredible as there were so many different piston powered warplanes in the air.
Just an aside from Spitfires, this year the Canadian Lancaster is coming over to fly with the BBMF Lancaster, a rare opportunity and will likely be the only time two will ever be seen in the air together.

The first Flying Legends I attended there was a fantastic dog fight between a 109 and Spitfire, the 109 had the Daimler Benz engine with its unique sound and when coupled with the sound of a Merlin was just wonderful. Not quite the same when the Spanish Buchon is dressed up in black crosses and used as a 109 as most have Merlin engines!

I was passing Duxford when I heard nice engine noise above, so pulled over and gorped for a bit. They were practicing for the filming of the BOB movie. Dogfights between Spitfires & Me109s (OK Spanish ones..) Must have been in '68. Later when I was on an airfield in Norfolk the BoB flight was stationed not far away and passed over often.
Do they still have a 109 with the DB engine flying in UK? The only was bent quite badly a few years ago after the pilot overran the strip and flipped on its back.

Must have been similar time I saw a convey of Spitfires on trailers going down the motorway. I assume they were static models for the film.

First is the old man and the flight engineer from the Dornier he shot down in 18 Aug 1940 and the second is with him on the right while waiting to scramble (32 Squ at Hawkinge)

A couple of memories.
Me and my ex-OH we're away in the camper van some years ago, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire. We'd taken the dogs out for a walk to the nearest village and had stopped for a pint of falling-down water. The pub was festooned with balloons, bunting and "happy 80th birthday" banners. We got a drink and sat outside, where there were a lot of people milling about. I got that feeling that we'd dropped onto something momentous. As we were talking, I heard the noise, shushed the ex and turned my ears the right way. she said "what can you hear?". My reply, "there's only one thing in this world that sounds like a Merlin, and that's a Merlin! The only sound that beats it is 2 Merlin's, and the only sound that beats that is coming towards us right now!!" Sure enough, the "City of Lincoln" flew overhead, did a circuit of the village then passed over again with a waggle of her wings. It turned out to be the landlord's Dad's 80th birthday and the old boy flew aircrew in Lancasters during WW2. As a birthday surprise, the family had arranged a fly past by the BBMF. Talk about serendipity!!
A few years later, we living and working on a touring caravan park near Oban, on the shore of Ardmucknish Bay, just a couple of fields away from Oban "airport". One summer, the airport hosted an air display with, amongst others, Spitfires, a Hurricane and IIRC, a Catalina. As the site was so big, over 300 pitches, we used to escort all ' vans to their pitch. I was on escort duty on the Sunday and I took an old couple who were up from Kent to their pitch, the nearest one to the airfield. Just as the old boy got out of his car, a Spitfire did a low level flyby past the caravans towards the airfield. The old boy watched it all in silence and when he turned back to me, he had tears rolling down his cheeks. Naturally concerned, I asked him if he was okay. He assured me he was and went on to tell me that as a kid growing up in Kent, he remembered watching dogfights during the Battle of Britain and seeing the Spit brought it all back for him.
More recently, a few weeks ago I left our yard, just by the A1M near Thirsk, heading to the top of Scotland. Coming up to RAF Leeming, I was treated to an impromptu air display from Hawk trainers. As if that wasn't enough, a Hercules took off as I got level with the airfield. As we were heading north, I let him overtake me (really!!) and he then banked west and flew straight over the top of me before banking north and disappearing into the blue.
Lovely memories and fantastic machinery.

Me and my dive bud a few year back, found in fairly good condition, remains of three Catalina Flying Boats, one Sunderland Flying Boat, around Oban seaboard area.
Cats at various depths, were in decent condition, on one, you could still open and close rear gun blister. Sunderland's are massive, nearly got lost inside!
