the only ones i go on is the iet and voltimum for information .some of the other forums are just up there own a ...e and arent helpfull to anyone not in the trade

no its just the top expers in all fields of electrical engineering and elecrical manafacturers . u can go through all the questions and answers or ask a question yourself and they reply within a couple of days

I thought so, I do know Voltimum, I get the newsletters, but I don't go on there much, I'll have a mooch if something in one of the newsletters seems interesting.
TBH, for product specific advice I normally go straight to the manu' technical help.
I think that some of the questions asked on there are pretty basic TBH.
As far as the top experts in all fields of electrical engineering, I'm not so sure!
I mean Tony Cable & Darren Staniforth contribute!...

ok, need some more assistance!

I just noticed that my old CU in the house for the garage only has a 13 amp fuse in place for the garage supply! I have found a 'red' fuse in the box with the CU which is the ones we need for a 30 amp supply, so wired it up….only to find it physically doesn't fit in the board!

I found a red 'mounting' which the fuse fits in, but can't work out how the mounting fits into the board…. here are a few photos.

The screw in the red mounting is to the side, where as the current black mountings are in the centre. What am i missing? Cant find any info about these things online!

your stuffed the 30 is a wylex .the 15 is an mem they wont intrerchange .use a `15 amp fuse wire in the holder for now and see how it goes. it should run your saw no bother

Ah ok.

This is the CU in the house so it will be the 32 amp (or 30 as its wire) fuse i need here. So would i be ok putting in a 30 amp wire into the fuse and just marking up the fuse to indicate that its no longer a 13 amp (not that anybody else will care!).

Can you buy these fuses still? Just to be right and proper?

i just had a look and i havent any old ones of them . u might get a 30amp one of ebay along with its backplate .some people put larger wire in the holders but i cant personaly in a customers house .theres a robber on ebay has one for 9 quid will fit http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MEM-MEMER...743683?hash=item1a07d7f703:g:WjAAAOSw37tV-Bnr make him an offer

So, some good news is i managed to source a red 30 amp fuse free of charge!

Next issue! My rotary isolator 4 pole switch has arrived with no wiring instructions. I have never seen the inside of one of these so i am a little confused!

I will only have a t&E coming in, and one leaving. Can anybody help?

On the left i have my earth connector and below is a neutral connector.
Top row i have 1/L1, 3/L2, 5/L3 and the top of the switch unit
Bottom row is 2/T1, 4/T2, 6/T3 and bottom of switch unit

both earths together both neutrals together live one brown wire in . 2/t1 brown out thats single pole or u can wire live 1 and live 3 input and t1 and t3 output then its double pole isolated

The switch is classed as a 4 pole. So am i right in saying i could use any one of the 4 combinations?

What exactly does the '4 pole' mean? Is it just that i can switch 4 different things at once?

its 4 pole as in 3 phase and neutral but u can use it on single phase and just use 2 conections which would be double pole isolation one item switched on and off

Right:
Consumer unit in the house wired CB changed to 30 amp from 15 amp
Consumer unit in the garage has a 16 amp type c CB
2.5mm T&E wired to a rotary isolation and then to the 16 amp socket
saw plugged straight into the 16 amp socket

Some playing about tonight and i think the verdict is: Sorted! Although i have not tested the saw under load, it sounds a LOT faster! I let it run for a few mins, then tried on and off. Every time it started as it should, unlike before.
Of course i need to try the saw under load to see if the problem has gone for good, but looks very promising!

I also still have the new NVR which i have not yet fitted as i didn't think that was the problem anyway.

So a big THANK YOU to everybody for their input and help!

….Although i don't think i understand regarding the rotary switch! haha. I have just wired it with earths together, neutrals together, then the live in and live out in opposite sides of one of the ports (the left most, so L1 and T1). Brightspark, your talking about using two connections…. do i need to change how i have wired it?

no its satisfactory just using it as single pole but if i did it i would put the neural wires through the switch as well

Just don't switch the earth on the 3rd pole!
