12volt motor question

Hi guys I have a friend who has a large hog roast machine with a burned out motor and a ******** reduction gearbox. I have acquired a caravan mover which does around 140 rpm a minute. This is way too fast to rotate the pig so I was wondering if it was possible to reduce the voltage to the 12v dc motor to get it to rotate slower ? would the lower voltage strain the motor if it was less than 12v ?

it would run slower on a reduced voltage but with that you get reduced power..

ime in the middle of making a power feed to my drill/mill machine using a transit window motor and a tattoo gun variable power supply running it...i can creep the motor at 2V but reduced power so ime also going to go through a pair of high and low gears to give me back the slow running at a higher voltage hence more power.

Thought about fitting the motor then adding a potentiometer to reduce the rpm's?

no room for a 2 to 1 belt and pulley drive added

get yourself an old 9" grinder and use the reduction box head on that...

How much current does it draw, you could use a PWM circuit (Pulse Width Modulation), lots on eBay for not much money.

Problem there is that the potentiometer will have to dissipate quite a lot of power and would get hot.

Best solution would be PWM - or you could try half-wave rectified DC - AKA "Pulse Power" in the days of Hornby Dublo!

I built a hog roaster a couple of years ago (thread on here somewhere) I used a Parvolux motor and gearbox, this gave around 6 RPM which was still a bit fast, I geared it down to 2 RPM using motor bike sprockets and chain. Speed was just about spot on,

Rs components do the type of motor for this. 3rpm 230v don't know the part number but should be easy enough to find on there website

Should do about 10 revs per hour on 12v.

The problem with a reduced voltage is that motor may well get hot in the process. You are better running at its rated voltage and gearing it down. Using a worm to spur combination takes little space and gives a good ratio.

That's the good thing about PWM, it turns the DC into a variable pulse square wave so the motor gets full voltage but in pulses.
