I did the same for years, except my crate included an emergency supply of tea, sugar and long-life milk - I used to travel a lot with work!
That made me laugh - next to grey crate with the car emergency kit - sometimes I pack a blue crate with:
Dog bowl
2 ltrs of water
1/2 ltr of UHT milk
Tea bags
Two cups
1x teaspoon
500ml fuel bottle of petrol
Coleman 442 duel fuel stove.
1 ltr whistling kettle
2x folding deckchairs.
Reason being if we make a long journey with the dog - I will pull in a layby for a brew and the dog can have a run/wee. I hate locking the dog up in the car while I go into the services for a cuppa.
I don't mind joining the dog to relieve myself in an open field - but wifey does moan a bit....
