if you google, there's a special trick for connecting up multiple batteries so they all take roughly the same load
if you imagine lining the batteries up (wide edge to wide edge)
and then connecting them all in parallel
you should take the positive from the first battery and the negative from the last... the ide being that the resistance in the battery cables will be even over all of the batteries
doesn't really matter on a car, when the batteries get a full equalising charge every time you drive around, but matters if you're off grid / somewhere where they won;t get a decent charge very oftern
re: a post a few pages back saying an alternator won't charge a totally dead battery... that's true, but it has to be totally totally dead, when I was a kid I made a battery charger with a motor and an alternator, used an old duff battery my dad had... I'd discharge with with a 12v lead light and then charge it up again for testing
if there was enough power in the battery to give the bulb the slightest glow, that was enough to power the field coils and get the laternator putting out power.... so if you've had enough power to start an engine you're golden :-)
