110 record QR vice

Hi
I'm new to this site I have 110 Record steel vice and when I use quick release and put thev jaw butt up to the object I am holding the quick release bounces back then tightens up no problem I have checked tension, wear and cleaned it it still the same .Am I missing something.

Welcome to the group

Check the half nut is seated correctly on the main screw and there is no build of grease/dirt preventing it from engaging. Also ensure the flat bar that disengages the half nut isn't bent and with no pressure on the Q/R lever it shouldn't exert any pressure on the half nut. If it does release the tension on the Q/R lever.

Vice quick release mechanisms require the screw and nut threads to be engaged before the turning of the handle results in jaw movement. Butting the jaw up to the workpiece will mean this only happens occasionally, and how often this happens will be dependent on thread profile. It could take up to a nearly whole turn of the handle, before the threads engage.

Push the jaw to the piece, let go of the QR lever, then use the handle to take up any slack & firmly clamp the piece.

Quick release is merely a way of quickly moving the slide into general position. Final clamping & initial release are always done via the handle.

Thankyou all for replying.
That's what I do it just seems to release QR halfway then on tightening pops out fully so .
Like I said in earlier posts all clean and appears no wear on thread and half nut so i will tinker with it again.

Sorry for not being clearer just full of hay-fever lol .
I can open the vice fully on Qr then put a object in vice move jaw up to it then when I tighten with the handle it pops into place and tightens like it's not sitting on thread initially when releasing Qr, bounces that second then tightens no problem.

If it's tightening without problem, then it's likely fine. It's unlikely the nut & screw will be perfectly aligned initially, but it will raise the nut into the screw fully within one turn of the handle.

When releasing the clamped piece, as I mentioned earlier, release the tension/pressure via the handle, not by using the QR lever.

I have a Record 36 that the screw jumps on the nut due to play on the bushes, although it’s extreme as you will see in the pics

F'k me, that goes well beyond the description of play. The old saying referencing a bill-posters bucket springs to mind with that one.

You ought machine up some sleeves to take out that slop.

If I had the means I would. I’ve no idea how it got in such a state. Bought it off this group with a problem with the QR. Waste of £50.

The collar on the screw is also badly worn so sleeves alone won’t resolve it

As long as the collar is resting against the sleeve, it'd work, even though that collar is rounded. I could always have a go at trying to sort/make some sleeves for you for that, if you like?

If you want to have a go, pay for the postage and you can have it. At the moment it’s sat inside the garage door being a trip hazard.

Looks very even. I wonder if it has the wrong screw?
