100E Roller

Hello

I bought a mask and regulator from Weld-equip a little while ago and now have a cheap little 100e Mk2 to learn on.

Weirdly though the roller is ovalled - the shaft runs true without it (with a little bit of play if pushed) - but it's clear to see the roller is out of true and produces an up and down motion with it fitted.

With the spring set just right the feed remains smooth - but I'd like to replace the part.

I've emailed weld-equip to see if I can buy a replacement, but I can't think why that would happen ? Is seems very odd for the whole thing to somehow wear oval rather than be worn on one of the grooves ...

Can anyone enlighten me ?

Have you got the grub screw screwed onto the flat of the shaft OK? If not it might pull the roller off-centre.

I'll double check in the morning, but I certainly checked it was square to the flat before tightening it up.

A bit of a delayed reply ....

I exchanged an email with the helpful Steve of weldequipe, who spoke about the lining often being a source of trouble ... So I assumed that perhaps there was intermittent resistance in the lining that causes a back pressure though the wire and deflects the roller on its shaft ...

Tonight I've done the extra look over ..... and its definitely the roller that hasn't been centrally bored.

Bizarre!

The shaft runs true without the roller on, and with no wire the roller still ran out of true. A bit of measuring with vernier calipers showed the roller was round but the hole wasn't centred. It must have been like that from new?

So... I've asked Steve if he can supply a new roller, however from looking in the parts books on Clarke's site it seems the roller mechanism changed with mine presumably being an earlier type.

Mine looks the same part fitted to the 130en,
110en, 160en etc.

Anyone have a spare drive roller ...? :-)

by the sounds of it do you have to wind it up with a key for 20 minutes ? noise like that belongs in an old clock or a toy train

It is the clockwork model. Tiring but very economical.

Seriously though - Ive no idea what a motor that old should sound like... But other than the surging caused by the out of round feed ... It welds very nicely.

My 130 had a wheel that was a bit off center. It worked fine after I cleaned up the bushing that the tensioner rides on.

I did make a new one on the lathe. If you know someone with a lathe they are not hard to make.

There an ok welder and worth a fix. Weld equip will sort you with what you need. A complete wire feed is not expensive
