100 NO GAs Mig Welder

Hi Guys,

I am one of those people who like to give everything a go, so as i have a not looking so good TR7 in the garage I decided to invest in a gasless welder.

Not wanting to spend to much at the moment as i dont know if I can do it or not yet i bought thie following from screwfix.

It comes with an on \ off switch a wire feed dial and a button that says 10% \ 15% and i can flick between the two, so my question

is it good enough to weld the panels I want it to

and as a rough idea what speed should the wire be and should it be on 10% or 15% ?????

With a 60A minimum and gasless wire, you will do little more than blow holes in body panels.

Hi Stan, Is it too late to send the welder back on the 7 day distance selling regs? It will be completely rubbish for car panel work. 60 amps is far too much for bodywork on the minimum setting, and I'd be surprised if it operates correctly on thicker metal either.

Gasless isn't great either. Try for a Clarke. Cheapest one would be the 90EN which would just about cope with 2mm sheet with a little prep work. And try for one that takes gas for bodywork.

What sort of amp range does the welder need to be then guys for body panels ???

Do you think this one would be any good.

That might work at 27A, but it is still a gasless welder. Gasless wire runs hot and is difficult on thin metal.

You will need gas to do body panels. As Malcolm said look at the 90EN.

I have a Clarke 90EN and have been useing it gasless on 1.2mm and 1.5mm mild steel tube.Using the welder gasless can be frustrating to work with and it can be un-predictable where the bead will lay because of the smoke from the flux( you cant see what your welding). In a confined space etc a mask is recommended because of the fumes plus your welds wont be neat(bird poo). It does weld to a fashion but dont expect great looking results.

I trolled through this forum for many months before deciding on what to buy and bought a decent cheap welder for my needs. I am now saving up to go onto the gas bottle route at long last because I am after stronger and neater welding.

Ask for advice on here and have a good look at the past threads before making any purchase.

I think im gettinng the gist of this now, please tell me if I have got this right as i said i am a complete beginner,

I understand that gasless welding seems to run hotter and make life more difficult.

The ampage bit is a bit more confusing, as i understand it,

If i used my min setting of 60 amps as the torch is against the metal arcing it would burn rather than penetrate;

whereas if i had one on gas at say 25 amps for arguments sake it would take a little longer to burn thus allowing better penetration of the metal.

Is that right ???

Sounds round about right to me although I'm no expert. Also the lower the amps the slower the speed so that the weld has time to penetrate. The higher the amps the faster the speed to make sure you hang about too long and blow holes. I used the 105EN on it's lowest setting and about 3ish wire speed on car bodywork but you still have to be careful about blowing holes.
