I use sealing compound (Loctite pipe seal) on parallel threads and tape on taper threads as a rule.
After having a look round on the internet (wikipedia) it would appear that ptfe is suitable for tapered threads but not much use on parallel joints (spot on rtbcomp)
HOWEVER loctite thread sealant is £9 from screwfix so it seems such a waste for 1 joint - but it is the proper stuff for the job tho
ptfe - would it do ??????????

Give it a whirl - it can only leak
Look at the bottom of this page,

They have a minimum order, but there are a lot of other goodies you may be interested in!
Had a go at sealing with ptfe tape -
rtbcomp - thanks for the link to an alternative supplier to the loctite thread sealer - was half the price but £3.95 delivery took it back up to similar price (you did say there was a minimum order value) - thanks all the same
HOWEVER
Reducer into the air tank (parallel fit) couldnt get it to seal no matter how much tape i put on (did try it without tape but was worse) In the end i found some GAS ptfe tape which is different and slightly thicker - WORKED

they can be replaced for about £15-20 by a better one from Machinemart that has adjustments for cut in and max pressure. I'd double check that, the last one I had from MM only had the cut-out setting on it.
