1.6 mild steel t fillet

Hi there, just looking for some advice, im doing t fillet on 1.6mm at college using a number 6 cup 1.6 tungston, dc neg, 30 amps, using switch not pedal, with 3 seconds of up slope an 3 seconds of down slope, I start off well but the metal justs get too hot and the vertical metal just burns through half way down the weld. Please help me!

You need to either set up pulse on the machine or buy a foot pedal.

Yeah most likely, it is hard toget the puddle started on base metal but when I up the amps I burn through! Gunna try a foot pedal next time, up my travel speed and practice practice practice! Its so frustrating when you think youve got but you aint even started!

Higher amps, shorter arc and move faster will result in less heat into the work piece.

Are you using any filler rod?

Yeah using 1.6 filler but flying through it once it hot enough, I did ask the college tutor if I should use a thicker filler to cool the pool and add a bit more material but he said no 1.6 should be fine! Thoughts?

I would be welding that using a 1.6 tungsten sharpened to a point, around 50 - 55 amps, and 1mm filler, forget pulse settings while learning they will only add another factor to confuse you with, a pedal is handy but not essential and I personally wont let learners use one until they have mastered basic torch control.
Fillets are well covered in the forum tutorial, all done with no pedal or pulse at all

Thicker filler than 1.6?. no.

At 30amps i'd want to be using 1mm filler rod.

Hello.

You did not mention argon gas flow...

In T joints you can stick out the tugnsten a little bit more, you will see better and it will be easier to keep a short arc.

I have found that in this kind of welds a little wave from side to side helps to spread the heat in both walls.

I'm doing all my car panels @1mm thick, with 35-40 amps 1.6 tungsten and 1mm filler. When I first started I had the power lower like you and 1.6mm filler (Ihad no smaller stuff), but same as you burnt holes as you travel too slow.

Turn up the amps and go fast with smaller filler and it will be fine and you put less heat in that way

edit.. That's on a switch as I don't have a pedal..
