The "alternative" energy fad is big business, but the one thing you can be 100% certain of though, is that if any of these fads seriously challenged fossil fuel based world economy, it would quickly get buried very deep!
It is possible to work out mathematically (well beyond me though) the power required for a vehicle of a certain weight to cover a 1/4 mile in a specific time, and I would think that VW must have had around 400-500bhp available to achieve the time claimed.
However putting down 400-500bhp through skinny tyres which dont seem to even be warm seems unlikely, but if it were possible is something an awful lot of people involved with drag racing all round the world would be very interested in.
