I took the grinder to it and replaced as you said. Skill level about med.
Joddled the plate.
Found i had problems with the open edge burning. Cut power to low which was fine, but not enough penatration ie pin hole leaks . tiny cracks.
Been a nighamre. Did some solder wiping which took out a...
I have taken the grinder to the thin patch and starting to mig weld new in. Looking back (assuming i have no leak problems) this was a good decision as it has removed the area where they rot.
Hopeing my welding will be ok. What is the braze over weld?
I only have mapp gas which is not quite...
HiAll
Just been playing with a pin holeon my land rover (cleaned properly) fuel tank.
Eventually brazed it up and stopped leak. Did test and a few other pinholes/ weeping going on behind protector plate. Took bull by horna and cut plate off planning to mig it back.... Why not?
Problem was...
The reason i want to mend it is the challenge of fixing it. I have a good replacement for £5 about 20 miles away, but it is good to fix for the self satisfaction and gain the skill, especially on steel as some bits are not replacable.

Thought i would have a go at brazing my land rover bits having failed with the thin metal problems on the air cleaner.- Cracks / not sealing ans to thin to get a proper weld going haveing tried to pluse it.
Any general tips to get me started. Have a mapp gas torch with wide or small flame...
Had a bit of success by laying the torch flat and pointing at the thin metal in bursts. This gives a thicker edge to fill, but your right there is not enought meat to let things weld / run properly. Cant sand the inside or get a backer in. Only option is to weld inside and back outside?
Hi Guys
i have just spent 3 hrs trying to repair a pin hole in a land rover oil filler air cleaner. thin metal. i was hoping for a quick blast and end of problem but have welded and grinded , tested for leaks again and again. the welded area is now about 2". Its not so much closing the hole...
I looked and phoned around and found prices were high ish for a small lump oif plastic. about £15-20. IN the end -- i ended up with a spare from my local BOC centre for £13 delivered!!! So ther'e not all bad. How they are cheaper i do not know. Perhaps they see the benifit of keeping us welding...
Hi All long time no post. Been playing with engines and oil.
The wire spindle / hub end for my cebora pocket turbo 130 has broken. The have modded it.
Any suggestion for a good sensible priced mail order outfit to deal with.
Regards
Ian
I believe ironically you can get cebora spares from BOC in POOL. Cebora make badged welders for boc.
if you guys do get gassed up with the perranporth place , you can get a co2/argon reg from mole valley farmers at st columb for about £24 - sorted.
For those welders in mid cornwall , bunts...

call the guy he is very helpful.
I have mixed feelings with the stuff.
Good for filling joints!!
Metal is harder than the ally i am welding which is ok.
Bit like soldering.
just finished the job by running easyweld into the joints and ground/ filed the edges. Bit like 'lead loading' i guess.
pretty good job, needs a smear of filler but fine.
will post pic soon.
i discovered aircraft rivets today. drill hole, dimple V it, push rivet through, bang from rear...
I was adventurous yesterday and cut out the bad bit from my land rover lightweight wings, (stone angle grinder)(before photo). Made a new panel on a plywood former (worked well) joddling the joint. (made from mole grips and a couple of slugs of metal)
Welded new in using plug welds and a...
The quarry where i get mine is above a beach but does not contain salt. i checked with the guy for the reasons you mention. his is extracted from a sand clay mix and i believe the sand is a by product. My other worry was the possibility of silicon dust from the sand which is why i use a mask...
