I've used Rusts epoxy primer (2 part mix) and gravitex. Very happy with both products. Gravitex is grey like primer (i think you can get black as well) so needs overpainting. It looks factory in texture.
I had a look at my mk2 flap yesteday (stored on my parents driveway) and the hinge is shallower than the Corrado's. Definitely worth a try swapping it over.
Stripped the turbo and cat (rattling) on the daily and giving it a serivce, inner and out track rods and tandem pump gasket change whislt...
No real update I am afraid as the turbo has blown on my daily driver (mk4 golf) and although i have a few cars none of the bloody project cars are roadworthy.
This is likely the route I'll take - i'll inspect the option of playing with the mounting point on the car itself but if i screw up a get a dent in the quater panel. Whereas if i screw up the hinge i just need a new £20 fuel door.
Thanks and that's a good tip on the wood and pliers - more gentle than a hammer.
Which bit do you mean on the rear edge - this part? I'm holding it in position as i've taken the tank out and also the locking mech.
Cheers Stuvy, they're not far at all - about 40 mins i guess. I had fingers burnt in the past so if i can't do it myself i think it's worth it for a proper job.
Heard good things about Finishline near Stevenage too.
Thanks veesix. Interesting as the mk2 one appears to measure 2mm higher/deeper than the corrado so will stick out more. My mk2 is hopefully being moved to my house at the weekend so will swap over and see.
The locking mech also needs work on the corrado. Instead of cutting the square hole big...
100% - this car has now been up in the air for 6 weeks. I am learning as I go but do enjoy the process. It is really hard to find a professional shop that will take as much car as you do i.e. I've really made sure all the box sections etc are clear from debris with an air line and am waxing...
I agree with the comments on their approach. Now i know how to weld they shouldn't have cut the whole lot out. I would have just done the bits needed - just like repairing the lower section of a wing - i wouldn't cut the whole arch out!
I wonder how much effort i should throw at this. I want to...
Actually it's interesting you say that as I have a mk2 golf as well. I just assumed it was exactly the same door! The mk2 isn't parked at my house currently but i can go and get the door tomorrow and try it out.
Thanks! If the hinge can be fettled that would be the ideal. There is a reinforcement lump behind where the screws go :(
I need to remove it from the car and have a look. The part circled in Blue looks to me to be the part that needs to go inwards but there is no adjustment. The red part looks...
Hi,
My car had a new panel welded in to repair the fuel door aperture. The car is a Corrado but the panel is a mk2 golf part. The bodyshop that did the work hasn't done a great job overall on the car and I've since had to strip the car down back to a shell and re-build it, learnt to weld and...
I've not got proper classics but i think might be eventually, hopefully. I'll probably thin the fleet to 2 or 3 over time
'96 Corrado VR6 (on the road, sometimes!)
'95 Corrado 16v (light project)
'96 Golf GTI 16v (light project)
'88 Golf GTI (project)
oh and that silver mk4 is mine too...
