Hi,
I use a similar setup and am doing similar work to you - some of my experience may be helpful, maybe not :)
Yes - the gassless wire flux pool does make it impossible to see the weld pool - there is nothing that I can do about this since I weld outside - but I had other vision problems too...
Amazingly yours is even worse than mine...
Oh, BTW, cross member is only a body off job in a garage - if you are doing it yourself there are 'ways' :D heh heh
1st: Portasol gas soldering iron. Any place at any angle. No problems with trailing lead or with wind-chill. It's a superb piece of kit.

I used to work for TI Cox in Nottingham - they made car seats. In fact they made the seats in my Range Rover some years after I left :) Most of what I was doing was tool maintenance - the welding was mainly putting press-guards together. All crude stuff you know: lay on enough pigeon-poo and it...
Thanks for the welcome Welderpaul, I live in LS26 - near the Rothwell Sports centre if you know it?...
I used to do some MIG 30 years ago when I worked in a toolshop. It's a bit different when you are welding on your back in the windy outdoors - I have found that I can get on ok with gassless...
Thanks!

I have just registered on this forum so that I can say a big Thank You to those that suggested flicking the on-off switch. My symptoms were that the fan worked and a relay clicked when I pressed the trigger so I never suspected that the power switch was not on...
