Hey guys! Long time no see.
Wondering if you may be able to help me out with a temperamental plasma cutter.
I got it on eBay as "untested" but that meant "broken". Doh! It didn't come with a torch and the guy I got one from wasn't sure it would be the right one, so the problem may be torch...
As above, ER70S2 or A15 is the rod you want. Using a matched filler will cause the material to become brittle, and a post weld heat treatment would be required to bring the piece back to full strength.
A mild steel rod allows for some elasticity in the weld, but due to it mixing with the parent...
It is just one day, and you don't leave with any qualifications. However, it is one on one, and you will leave with more skill than you will get on a college course. When I started to weld it took me at least six months to build up the skill I can get my students to in one day.
Why hello there!
I'm working at The Bicycle Academy, we teach people to build bicycle frames using files and brazing techniques. We have been using the Weldability torch but they are starting to wear out rather rapidly. Also, the valves are poo gash! Basically just a plastic O ring and the...
I'm looking for something a bit better than that kind of thing... more along these lines:

This one is tickling my fancy, but at £167 inc. VAT it better be...
I'm after a quality torch like a Weldcraft or Weldtech etc.
Has anyone any recommendations of a good torch they use and where to buy in the UK.
Seems to me you can find anything you want when it comes to welding in the States but over here we just have the cheapo run of the mill stuff... Maybe...
Im thinking of trying citric acid to clean the scale from the inside of my cycle tubes, but this talk of etching is getting me worried I may damage this thin tubing. Can anyone shed some light?
You guys should check out www.thebicycleacademy.org
I teach a tig course there, 1 to 1. I can tailor the course to your specific needs too, so if you have experience or not you will go away with some top notch results.
Good find hotrodder, cheers. useful for comparrison at least. by the way, S515 is annealed, S514 is heat treated.
Didnt realise you were heat treating Mike, makes sense of course. know what you mean about turning...the hard stuff always comes out best. or nasty leaded mild horrible stuff...
D'oh! I should engage my brain before replying...I actually knew that 4340 was EN24 equivalent.
Thats what I thought about s514/515. My thinking was that 515 wouldnt be any good because its annealed? Ok, so its going to vaguely normalise itself in the haz, but the rest of the piece must be...
Ok ok, I'll stop asking about weird/fancy-sounding flavours of stainless filler! ;)
Didnt have any interest in using any of the HY steels, just thought the ductility was pretty cool for stuff so strong. All the info is interesting though- cheers!
Mike I thought that en24t was nasty for...
Nice one, cheers!
Al, I'll look into those books...shipping seems to be a killer on metals and how to weld them... Thanks for clarifying CE.
Hotrodder, that website is the reason why we chose ER70S-2 wire...made an interesting read again now that I know a LITTLE more about whats really going...
Help please...this is doing my head in. I dont even know where to look for more information, and Ive got a feeling that Im asking for the moon on a stick...
How do I figure out/calculate/estimate the weldability of steels??
The only thing I can find online is to calculate the carbon...
