What's the best wheel for sharpeningTungstens? After a fair bit of googling there seems to be mixed advice. General rule seems to be that the harder the material the softer the wheel, although some also add that hard green wheel is good for tungsten carbide tools.
After using this for a while, I'm totally converted, should have done this years ago. I made a tungsten guide with a hole drilled through a bolt and a bracket bodged up ontop of the grinding rest on mine, and now sharpeningtungstens is so effortless, I find myself sharpening the same tungsten...
Wonderweaver, there a few peeps on here who are very well respected and definitely know their stuff and Richard is one of them.
In post #2 you stated "Ok tungsten grind it to a sharp point on a high grit even a flat sharpening stone and a drill will work.".
The grinding marks should run...
Thanks for the advice @richard and @Wonderweaver, I’ll be doing a lot of practicing with both size fillers till I get it right an comfortable with which I find best suits me, I do understand how to purge as it’s a simple process. I work with vacuum plasma welders which weld under argon so Ive...
I’m not sure I agree with a lot of this.
You don’t need a drill to sharpen tungsten, a simple bench grinder and rotating by hand is all I’ve ever done.
You certainly don’t need an O2 monitor, just fill the part volume 4-6 times over, keep the vent at the top and keep the flow rate nice and...
Hello tbh I think your taking on a bit much with your experience. Saying that if you don't challenge yourself you'll never learn . Ok tungsten grind it to a sharp point on a high grit even a flat sharpening stone and a drill will work. On the manifold you should be able to root fill and cap in 1...
Sharpening tig tungstens on any stone grinding wheel puts grooves in it, no matter how careful you are & will ruin the wheel for sharpening anything else! I definitely wouldn't let anyone near a tormek with a tig tungsten!
As has been said, get a cheap bench grinder & keep it just for tig...
I'm sure I'm not the first person to have this idea but would like to hear from anyone that's tried it.
I need something to sharpen 5-12mm drill bits and roughly sharpen cold chisels and the like. I don't own a bench grinder and generally don't don't like them anyway.
In work I'll sharpen...
Hi thanks for the replies so far. It was not specifically the dust I was worried about. The black silicon wheel is specifically for sharpening very hard materials such as tungsten carbide and I already have the Tormek grinder. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of using this wheel for...
the reason i do not use my water cooled wheel is because tungsten is hard and it would wear the wheel out in no time and probably mess it up for sharpening good stuff like knifes ect
I have a Tormek T7 water cooled sharpening machine. There is a black silicon wheel available which will lightly sharpen tungsten carbide tools. Has any one used one for sharpening TIG tungstens? If so what were the results? The stones are large, 250mm dia and very expensive, circa £130, but...
last night I took the little redundant Wolf grinder, added one cheap diamond cup wheel with a 20mm bush, and cut out the guard to suit...
Still have to extend the toolrest for tungstens on the side, but works pretty well as it is... and sure beats using the 4hp belt grinder for sharpening...
In all honesty if I could get away with no ball at all for every joint and situation I would. The balling is inevitable as we need cleaning and we need current. So I grind up my tungstens with various sized preps to allow various sized ball caps depending on how much current I want to apply. I...
...excellent.
Really very grateful for the effort and can see it being very valuable long term to refer back to.
On the subject of tungstensharpening I used a tutorial from 6061.com that makes two different angles on the tip but Richards comment on sizing it up for different ball sizes is an...
I use the same sort of disc, cheap on EvilBay, but clamped under the washer on one wheel of one of my bench grinders, does the job for sharpening, and have a chunk of steel with the right size holes, drop the tungsten in and whack the end...

Today's road trip netted me an empty Albee argon bottle from @Hood (who was also kind enough to give me some aluminium to play with) and also an 1300 x 850mm 0.5" plate from Brown & Tawse in Dundee; incredibly they didn't want anything for it! Cameron, the salesmen with whom I dealt, just told...
Hi, I'm very new to tig welding, and am trying to teach myself with the help of videos and such. But right out of the box, once I got my welder set up, I've been encountering the same problem.
The tungsten electrode (red) keeps melting. Every time I sharpen it, I pop it back in and slowly work...
Yes welding aluminium of all types and thickness
Yes AC
Re +/- balance don’t think I have that setting on my machine
But yes sharpening it on a flap wheel like I did before with no issues
Like I said it’s only started since I sent it away to sip for repair
If your welding alloy, i guess you mean aluminium alloy of some sort therefore you're running your machine on AC?
Whats the +/- balance setting on your machine, and what frequency do you have it set to?
Also, are you definitely sure the tungsten is not Thoriated Tungsten? That looks like the...
