Diesel price in London yesterday was £1.88 ....luckily I filled up at £1.50 a couple weeks ago.

I have some long trips to do this weekend...not looking forward to the next fill up!

Cheapest near me now is 140.9 and 167.9 for diesel.

It's sobering if you're old enough to think in "old money", the first petrol I bought was about 70p a gallon, that would be about 15p per litre.

My first transport on the road at 16 was a Puch Maxi. I could brim the tank inc T2 mix for less than a quid and it would get me to work and back for over a week.

I know for a fact my local petrol station Diesel is going to be £1.87. Speaking to my pal Dave who owns the station he was explaining why his diesel was 10p a litre more than Tesco down the road, he has to go week to week on price from the wholesaler whereas the big supermarkets get it price fixed for four weeks. So when it is going up he gets weekly incremental rises and the supermarkets are able to hold the price down longer. It works in his favour when the price is going down though, he can get ahead while the supermarkets are stuck with the higher price.

I used to put 35p worth in a Honda C50 which would take me to college and back numerous times, and this was going thru the Dartford tunnel from Kent to Essex every day.
always got it from the Deneholes garage near Grays. the garage seems to still be going to this day.

Less than 25p a gallon for petrol when I was sixteen in 1962.

Someone on my local village Facebook posted a picture of the local Tesco with a no diesel sign and went on a bit of a rant

This is normal as it's a self service and has actually gone longer than usual.

It is not a shortage, I think they only get a tanker when it runs out

Yes that garage is very much still in operation. It's just around the corner from where I work. I also went to Thurrock Technical College and road my Mobylette Motobecane (followed by an FS1E) to get there.

I think petrol was £1.70 a gallon in 1983 when I started buying it. Diesel was cheaper (£1.60?) but not many garages had diesel pumps.

In 1983 at 16 I was on £25:00 a week.

The online convertor thing tells me that £25:00 then is equivalent to £109:50 now. The current minimum wage for a 16 year old is £7:55 (going up to £8:00 1st of April), multiply that by an 8 hour day and a five day week gives you £302:00. So a 16 year old now is three times better off.

At 17 about £2.50. ( that is per week, not per hour ) and a 44hour week.

1983 aged 16 - I worked for my Dad - I was spoilt - £130 a week. Aged 17 it was £180 a week. Age 18 I went to work for myself and really started to earn some money - I also did a few days for Dad as well if I was short of work at this time.... On top of my wages - odd customer would give you a tip or drink sometimes - this used to add up as well - Dad always let you keep these gratuities. He never got too many he was so rude and blunt with the punters - but I was young and polite and got my share of them.

Flat amount of money per week - as many hours as he needed to me work - some weeks I did a whole Sat (six days a week) - other weeks I got Friday afternoon off and Saturday - just depends on what he had on.... Most days were 8am till 6am - 10hrs a day.

Money was lots more than my mates were on - but I was doing allot of hours and allot of work for it - I must admit Dad always stopped for an hour for lunch - so it was not all that bad.

Dad paid me for Bank Holidays and Xmas break - but if I wanted a week or two off in the summer for a holiday - I had to fund this myself (think he was trying to teach me something here?). This was on a self employed basis - I used to invoice Dad and Mother did my books (saved my tax money up for me - paid my stamp)
