Only legal in the UK on sub 1500kg trailers.
and tend to use chains.
I have had one trailer come off. I hadn’t put it on correctly, trailer hitch was just sitting on top of the ball. The break away worked perfectly when the trailer eventually came off. Never done it again, I always give the hitch one last push down with my foot to make sure it’s properly in place.
What happened to the proposed legislation to add trailers and caravans to the MOT list? Prompted by a number of caravan crashes caused by out of date and perished tyres I believe.
Always use the factory recovery eye on the rear of my D3 to attach the breakaway cable
It must be within 100mm of the centre line to be compliant.
The lift test is better.
Use the jockey wheel to lift the hitch till the car raises past the point it was at pre hitch up.
Thats part of the BE towing test.

I just wrap it round the ball.......to be honest I feel it would be better with a seperate attachment (in case the ball breaks)......Im one of the old school....proper tow ball for me, Alko type for the caravan....dont like, dont trust the swan necks, folders or detachable.@Justme, my tow bar is a Ford supplied one. It hasnt got any purpose built place to attach the break away clip. There is a hole but the break away clip is to big to clip on there. Solution was to put a shackle through the hole and clip onto that, is this legal? Or I could of put the breakaway round the neck of the ball, can’t find any recommendations from Ford to say that this is acceptable
Is that the centre line looking down on the tow ball or centre line looking side on?
If it's centre line from above then it's smack on
Never done the test, to old. Boots not let me down yet
Under what legislation??
