Due to other stuff getting in the way, my garage rebuild stalled, however, its now moving again, and time for a roof.
This photo is old, but you get the idea from it -
I have nothing more recent.
Details -
The length is 5.5m and the width 3.8m
The A frames are, i think, on a 10 degree pitch, and there are 5-off them. Ie two at the ends, and 3 in between. This makes the distance between them to be (aprox) 1.38m
The original roof was corregated asbestos.
The whole thing seems a crazy design, but it was built in 1971, and had no issues before i started messing with it, so i guess the proof of the pudding, and all that...
Desire -
What i really wanted was to put a slate roof on it. Im concerned about the weight. I mean the original aesbestos sheets weighed a bit, but not as much as a load of slates would. And then ive got the span between the frames...
And then the 10 degree pitch.
I thought of using 24x12 slates, and overlapping them the additional 4 inches (ie using the same batton spacing as 20x10s) but then im sticking more weight on there again.
These are the slates id be using -

Theyre what all the builders yards have around here at the most sensible price.
Or -
I could use the fake plastic slates. I think theyre a bit lighter. But theyre pig ugly. And the garage is about 1m below the garden - so when youre stood in the garden, you are looking directly at the roof, rather than the walls.
(the walls will be rendered)
Or -
I could use felt shingles. But thats another fake slate option, pretty much. And the cost is almost more than the slate - id need about 10 sheets of 18mm ply (£300), the felt shingles (about £7/mtr so another £140) and some sort of membrane.
..so £440 without the membrane. Vs. (not that i can do this, but...) 20 sqm @ 18.7 10x20 slates per mtr sq x 0.68 per unit (ex vat) comes to about £300 with vat. I know id need some battons and ridge tiles and that, but it would be a quality finish, not a 10yr life span bit of felt.
Or -
I just give up and fit corregated steel. I could probably do the job for less than £200 inc. And have to look at it for ever more.
Thoughts?
Maybe alter the pitch? I dont really want to do this, as id go up too far.
Add further a-frames? Not ideal. The prefab sections are all setup with the mount holes, etc.
I dont know how strong or otherwise the whole thing is. I could maybe do my "battons" out of 2x3 (laid the weak way round, so as not to gain height) but whats a 2" timber going to hold over a 1.38m span, over time? I dont know!
Like i say, im getting close to throwing in the towel and just buying some, completely out of place in the setting, plastic coated steel.... : /
