As some of you may know I’ve recently been sub-contracting to a local company. Serving, primarily, the waste from energy and recycling industry.
They were desperate for men, the job they were working on was 6 weeks work for 20 men. The start date came and passed with no PO.
Long story short, with two weeks to complete, I got the call.
First day, I’m sat in the security hut, an old boy turns up starting with the same company, but via a recruitment firm.
I said oh are you a plater or a welder?
“Neither, pipework/mechanical supervisor.” he replies
We get started, all he does is ask irrelevant, personal questions about the site, the company, the employees, to the supervisors.
Got involved in everyone’s business, asking everyone where they live, what they get up to, how he has this house, that house, this car, this bike etc.
Reckoned he was earning £750 a day on the rigs last year.
I took a dislike to him when I got put working with him and found him incompetent doing anything but passing tools. He couldn’t use a grinder, he was dangerous with it infact.
We came to find out he was 71 years old.
He lasted about a week before they managed to get rid of him.
Who do they replace him with, another bod from the same recruitment company.
A lad 25 years old this time. Time served pipefitter apparently.
Another one who can’t use a 9” grinder properly, can’t use a tape properly and used my square as a hammer.
Brought none of his own hand tools with him.
How he got through an apprenticeship, I don’t know, perhaps that highlights the state of our trades.
Anyhow he is still with us but limited to just welding duties really. Even that is **** poor. Reckons he is a right good pipe welder though.
Timeline is tight, so they get another welder from the same recruitment agency.
Big big lad, 23st+ and about 5’6”.
Not very mobile. Struggling to get around the scaffolding, over to the work area etc.
Again, welding **** poor, no initiative, dat on his phone most of the day, another who didn’t bring any hand tools.
Second day, he falls down a ladder, done the ligament in his knee.
Where on earth do they find these people.
I wouldn’t have the front to turn up if I couldn’t do the job!
