enamel polishing?

I keep talking about polishing our Rayburn cooker top.

It's not had a gentle life, and has been cleaned with abrasives. Now that the surface is keyed (really though, I'm talking matte rather than gloss) its a pain to clean.

Its not chipped much, so I really just want to restore the surface gloss.

Any ideas? I'm thinking a cloth something on some sort of power tool, with some sort of paste... Can you fill in what?

Polishing soap on a buffing wheel? I don't envy you though, that's a big area! You'd want the finest grade of soap, or maybe even jewellers rouge, which is a powder. Jewllers use it for watch glasses.

Would an automotive grinding compound do the job? Something along the lines of Farecla G3? It fooled some people into thinking my matt Land Rover had been resprayed.

I should say that my budget for this is less than £20. Better that its less than a tenner...

Im not looking for perfection. I could just take the top off and send it for re-enameling, but that would probably be a couple of hundred quid. But there's no point in me spending £50 plus to try and diy it.

I was thinking get a cheap cloth drill attachment from toolstation or whereever, and some sort of cheap paste?


Again, im not looking for some sort of perfect finish - its a bit of an experiment.

I would suggest the finer G10 for machine polishing.

I'm not sure if they would work on enamel but there are polishing sponges that go on n angle grinder for automotive use, I used one on the aldi grinder as it's variable speed. Not sure if they would be to aggressive for enamel but I wouldn't have thought so.
People polishing resin tend to just work down the grits and micropore to about 3000-4000 then use a polishing compound.

Might sound daft, and I've no idea if it'll work, but test a small area using some toothpaste.

Please Note: The Tubby polishing kit is not suitable for removing stains or restoring shine on the original (fired on/Vitreous) enamel surface . If you need to do this you will need to resurface the bath with a Tubby DIY bath resurfacing kit.

Toothpaste is a fine abrasive and also good on plastic headlight covers.
