transit diesel fuel pump

I have a 5th wheel transit with crew cab i used for my car racing transporter i fitted a turbo diesel engine which was a fly by wire i ditched the computer one for another pump which was adjustable so we richened the fuel flow mid range a chap in newport set it up that was 24 years ago it has run faultlessly towing the box trailer.
anyway it has gone faulty the fuel pump that is and the chap who done it has now gone (no big surprise there) do you know anyone out there who can strip repair my pump as a exchange unit will not deliver the required amount of fuel mid range and i can see a holed piston coming due to lean mixture.

most people just set them up by winding the adjuster out till it black smokes then backing it off half a turn.

what makes you think its faulty?

when I thought my high pressure pump had died but it turned out to be the low pressure lift pump.

i have a 96 turbo transit still on the electric pump and plan on doing that conversion, did it take much faffing to get timing/ diesel right?

Sorry I can't help with a pump specialist - but you won't hole your piston by "running lean" on a diesel. Unlike petrol engines, diesels run "lean" pretty much all the time.
You will just lose some (maybe a lot of) power if there's insufficient fuel injected.

if you search ebay/breakers/etc. for transit di bosch pump there should be plenty to chose from

all the turbo vans had an (inferior) lucas pump and electronic throttle

almost all non-turbo were bosch pumps


adjusting the pump is easy, there's a few guides on the internet about it, there's a crew ontop of the pump which sets the max fuel, and a screw on the back of the pump which sets the mid range fuel amount.... you essentially turn th top one 1/4 or a turn and then take it for a drive, if exhaust is ok dgo another 1/4 turn etc. etc. do that untill it starts to smoke and then turn the screw back a little

do the same again for the other screw


or,.... you can just fit the pump and run it as it - all you do with the tuning is give the van more power

What did he do to the Cruiser? Was it the 3.0 1kz-te engine?

Hi, Cruiser was 4.2 straight six, lovely engine, It was a few years ago, Spring tension under the diaphragm, Diaphragm position that moves the orientation of an off-sett tapered control rod and something else that I can't remember now, As soon as I got back home we did the same to my sons Toyota Hilux, Both ran sweet as a nut with no extra fuel used unless you give it the boot,
Just remembered the 3rd adjustment was the screw on top of the diaphragm cover under a sealed cap,This is the starting position of the off-set tapered rod, The diaphragm was positioned by feel. As you turn it the resistance changes as the off-set taper moves on the ring loaded plungers, Quite simple when its fresh in your mind,
Diaphragm needed a lot more adjustment to the spring pressure than internet said,

Some great advice there thanks everyone brilliant forum.
The engine would run on tick over but not rev just go flat when it warmed up it would rev stationary but die when you tried to pull away so i assume it is the pump this is not a common rail system and i don't fancy diving in there with very little knowledge of how it should be that is very unusual for me also the chap who done it the first time used the lucas pump as it was adjustable the bosh pump was not suitable the trailer is 16ft long and a big box i converted the front (swan neck) to caravan for overnight and the race car went in the back i fitted air con sink fridge shower and beds in there just about on gross train at 5 ton hence the need for speed LOL

i don't think there is a lift pump on this model but i am open minded and ready to learn.

I'm not 100% but I think it should have a lift pump (almost all do)

if it does it'll be on the passenger side just under the exhaust manifold

fuel tank is on the passenger side, fuel lines come up on the passenger side, to the lift pump, the around the back of the engine clipped to the bulk head and to the fuel filter on the drivers side

those pumps are pretty solid, very rare there's any problems with them, well worth changing the lift pump first, yo can get a cheap one for under £20 or a better brand for £30, I think it's worth going for the better one (those were the prices last time I looked, tho it's been a long time)

also worth changing the fuel filter, get one from ford, seams after market ones can be a bit hit and miss


worth spending £40 on those bits before you change the pump, even if they're not the problem it does no harm changing them anyway (the lift pumps do need changing now and again)


fuel pump is easy enough to change... but tbh if you know a decent mechanic you might as well have them do it, it'll be done in under an hour, bread and butter stuff to them with ncie easy access... then at least you know it'll be perfect!
(might as well change timing belt at the same time while it's off)

That's good sound advice from knighty lotus 30. Judging from your symptoms it sounds like the delivery pump cant deliver the required amount as it is starved of fuel. I have repaired several diesels with your symptom's and they have turned out to be mostly blocked filters or occasionally delivery pumps rusted up.

Brilliant chaps thanks truck is in bits pump is off i will have a look tomorrow for a lift pump everyday is learning day it has been in my yard for about 5 years dead just decided to put life back into it the tin moth has got in there lol a bit to do
i will post tomorrow on what i find

You wont damage a diesel with lack of fuel because they always have more air than fuel and dont run 'weak'
What you need is a bosch montego turbo diesel pump and fit the the turbo bits to a std transit diesel pump, this gives you the boost when the turbo kicks in, BTW that engine is a low blow engine anyway, a diesel specialist is the best man to do this mod but can be done at home, there is a guy in northwales that does my work, he know the script of what to do because he did one conversion for me under my instruction for my turbo tranny with this exact senario it ran faultlessly in fact it is still in my 4x4 tranny in the back yard.
