Mini engines?

Clearing out my dads house and I've found an old mini engine and gearbox.
Don't want to bin it if it's rare or worth something but I don't really know what's what with them?
It looks like an A series lump but the 12A on the block is apparently for a later 1275cc one
If it's from a Cooper it's worth a bit I suppose, if it's from a Metro it's not worth scrap money!

Any ideas?

If I remember correctly a Metro engine doesn't have the bypass hose between the head and the water pump.

It's an A-series and will be worth something. The Metro K series has an aluminium block, head & rocker box and overhead cam. The single cam ones aren't worth anything, but the twin cams will be.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

It could be a 998 or 1098 with those numbers and the cast manifold, pretty sure it's a 998 pre A+.

The fuel pump on the back, under the manifold, should help. All the ones I played with had SU electric pumps by the rear subframe. So it must be a bit later, Metro? Or 1275 GT?

1275 GT clubman had single 1/1/2 carb early ones had S block cooper S also had 2 extra studs in the head wahts engine no near no 1 plug on the block is it still there

Deffo a mini engine (rad mounting & single exhaust flange) make it a pre metro engine
Not 1275 as it has tappet chests
Has to be a 998 or a 1098 the engine number would tell you it is on a tag on the top face of the block
The S engines had 11 stud cylinder heads & tappet chests

There's also a number cast on the head which will give you a clue as to whether it's been tuned, something rings a bell about a 12 g 295 head on the small bore block being a good one for modifying. I've just had a look for my copy of David vizards bible on tuning the a series as he lists all the part number of the bits to look for and I can't find it

I think the number on the head is under the rocker cover

Also is the inlet / exhaust manifold one piece? I think that's an indication of a standard engine.

It's been that long since I played with minis that I can't remember much, however I do remember my last one used to go well past the last digits on the speedo

What year did the mini go over to cv`s ? All the minis I had were on those rubber UJ gadgets with the u bolts at the gearbox end.That looks like it has the push in CV`s like the allegro.

Mid 70's? I had an 84 with cv joints and my mate had a clubman that was late 70's and I think that had cv's

So did my sons but it did have a 2.0 litre engine in it...lol

Thanks for the replies! The little engine number tag has long gone! The manifolds are separate as for as I can tell. Maybe I'll lift the rocker cover and have a look what the number is. I've had a look online and it seems to be an A series lump going by the look of it position of heater outlet etc but I'm not sure about the number 12A . I don't know if this was to replace a knackered engine or was a knackered engine! It turns over and has compression

They are getting hard to find now I have scrapped hundreds

It's a 998cc It' panted yellow which suggest the A+ variety so from the early eighties onwards. Take a pic of the front/dizzy side and I can tell you which.

Early ones had a clamp plate on the dizzy

i agree with bob looks like allegro engine so 1100cc

Yep thats why I wanted a photo of the front of the block DB

It's not a 1275 engine if it was it wouldn't have a small head fitted, possibly a 1100 (1098).

You can tell which head it is by the orientation of the thermostat housing and the angle of the heater tap.
