Meddings A10 radial arm drill restoration

After a 420 mile round trip its home, just waiting for my mate with his tractor and forks to come and lift it off, its too big for my bobcat to lift off and trying to remove bits would need me to get the engine hoist onto the trailer, its a bit of a beast.

I shall try and keep tabs on how much this cost me. The drill was £250, possibly a bit steep considering that the motor was off and they had no 3 phase to show me it working, but I haven't seen one come up before so I was willing to take a chance. Diesel probably coast me about £115 at 21mpg for the disco.

Here's a few pics. Standard mug for scale, the motor and cover is in the back of the car.

It won't need much bolting down

Trying to reduce its weight to lift it off is going to be difficult but my mates tractor can pick up a couple of wet round bales at a time with the forks so should be a doddle with that.

It looks like it was originally green.

Quill works OK. One of the arms is missing and a the quill lock knob, quill spring doesn't do anything.

Gear knob doesn't shift, may need the spindle turning but I somehow think that its going to need a complete strip down.

I'm not impressed with the belt cover, its a thin flimsy bit of cracked fibre glass but looks original. I would be interested to know if they ever did metal ones.

Table has the usual marks and chips for its age, not as bad as some

Back right hand corner rim cracked off

Front looks like it was cut square, probably after being cracked off

Front right hand edge has been built up with weld. Looks shiny so could it be a nickel rod?

It may be a while before the next installment! I may look out for another meddings for parts, the head is probably very similar on the standard version.

I think it may go up in pieces as I renovate it, I think it would be too tall to get in as the lift hoist rail isn't very high and I would run out of chain.

Belt cover is pressed steel on my mf4 (same as your pacera). Callipers say 1.3mm or whatever that equates to in imperial.

I've edited that now! I'm not posh enough to use Latin however I do suffer from Plumbum Pendulitis occasionally

My mate turned up with his tractor but had is bale forks on so had to mess about with timbers under the table and a couple of straps but it is now nestling in the barn.

I want this, not sure how to get it from West Sussex though. It would make a cracking welding table and spares for the drill.

EDIT, I have sent him a message to see if pallet delivery is possible.

If you contact Meddings they will e-mail you a parts list & maybe a manual. Just hope that you don't need any parts from them - their prices are eye-watering!

My Mk4 has a metal cover.
Be careful with that gear lever, inside is a fibre gear, sacrificial. Bloody £90 from Meddings to replace it.

Needed a new pulley after the old one broke in half trying to remove. £100!

As turbo says, if they still have any stock, be prepared to fall on your ass.

That's if they have one. The one for mine is not made any more and I had to get a worn second hand one off ebay. It has started jumping out of gear so It's probably going again!!

I found my drill in an auction back in 2012 here

it doesn't state what the buying price was but there were 11 bids of 25 quid increments so at least 275 quid depending on opening price. It was in Sheffield, I bought it down in North Somerset.

I got one two years ago. Told my dad change the pulleys and leave that handle down!

We got one of these at work, bit better condition that yours (but thats why you want to renovate it). I really enjoy using it, nice bit of kit.
