Following remarks twixt Weldequip and I last night - here's the opportunity for him to air his opinions re Churchill and Gallipoli...

I have a feeling he's going to say that Churchill's strategy to open a second front towards Turkey was good, but the implementation by the Royal Navy was shockingly useless and destined the campaign to farce and disaster, and their wasteful use of the ANZACS was nothing but ignorant slaughter.

Are you sure it's not just going to be a review of the Mel Gibson film (which I actually quite like)

Spent a year in Australia and drank at their RSL's regularly (like British legion here) Gallipoli gets mentioned frequently - and this time I don't mean the film.

Hmm. Dunno. I've never seen the film. Don't know much of the history tbh. Still waiting for the Weldequip words of wisdom, but he seems to have ******** off for the night.

The film highlights the futility of the whole thing with a few Rolf Harris two little boys moments added in for fun.

Probably not as moving as the last episode of blackadder goes forth where they go over the top, but heading that way.

Now having trivialised the whole thing we await weldequip.....

Well, to be honest Si, my knowledge of this is very scant at best! but, from what I know...our greatly reveared future Prime Minister... Sir Winston Churchill was, at the time, Lord of the Admirality, and, dispite being advised his ships would be shot to pieces by heavily defended positions + men mown down he still ordered the onslaught...resulting in total carnage & a complete embaressment for the "British" army ("It's OK, they're only convicts" ).
So, a classic case of "Lions led by Donkies"...but the tit still managed to make Prime Minister! Am I on the right kinda lines?!

Didn't Churchill get fired over that navy issue and "banned" to his mansion?

If I remember correctly Big C became Prime Minister because he was one of the few donkeys that correctly recognized the potential dangers coming from Germany and criticized Hitler, while many other donkeys thought it would all go away automatically.

Oh yes. I read somewhere that Nev Chamberlain once wrote (I mean, FFS, it's one thing to say it but to write it for posterity... ) regarding the Nazis' tratment of the Jews:

'I have no love for the Jews either'.

which has been taken to mean that the future would have been bleak for British Jews had the guvmint reached an accord with Hitler instead of opting for a bit of a shindig Frogside.

As for the Dardanelles, well it was typical Brit military thinking at the time (as epitomised in Blackadder) - they're just a bunch of fuzzy-wuzzies, our lads will soon have them all out for a duck, what-ho. Luckily the current bunch take the camel jockeys a little more seriously. To be fair most Arabs couldn't raise the energy to punch their way out of a souffle but once you add in a rucksack full of Semtex and some religious fervour...

Anyway, it's a good job we don't have a major naval scuffle going on at the moment, seeing as most of our fleet has been flogged off to Chile and Brazil. Or was it Argentina.
Oh, and then there's one of the biggest supply ships we have, been laid up at Pompey with a bent prop shaft ever since someone forgot to check the sell-by date on a tow rope. It snapped and the lead tug was unable to stop the boat bouncing off the harbour wall...

no wonder our empire is limited to the isle of man now
