Ok guys and gals. Here's a pic of a wee rod - just 2mm. I've a bag of these kicking around the workshop. They are not magnetic, but appear not to be (just) nickel, as they give a yellow spark on the spark test. (nickel gives orange, and doesn't much want to do that). The yellow spark consists of straight carrier lines, length 6" to 10"or so, and clean - no odd flashes anywhere. (low carb or iron are like this - but are magnetic of course)

You'll notice the holder end has dod of black paint.

The rod is not ally btw, so no silly suggestions. I'm pretty certain it's not stainless either, although I could be wrong there. Welds well onto steel.

So, any ideas?
Edit - when overheated it becomes very brittle. - Could be Monel, except the spark test is wrong for that.

The coating looks similar to 7018.

They could be 7014's or maybe 7016. I have not seen any 7018's under 2.4mm but smaller 7014's are more common.

Could be 310 stainless (25Cr 20Ni).

310 will weld stainless and MS and MS to stainless. Its non magnetic and a dull grey colour.

Not sure about the spark though.

The overheat bit doesnt follow though. What becomes brittle when overheated?

I think you may be right on the stainless. The spark is longer than I said above - I had another look - at least 20", plus some forking, but not a lot... and exactly the same as a pack of austenitic's in the cupboard. But I'd still say the spark's yellow.

The brittle/overheat thing might be a bit of a red herring - On a suspicion they were ally (ha ha), I tried welding to ally plate, but had to turn the juice up. The rod burned down in seconds of course and the resulting deposit (which DID stick to the ally, somehow), blunted a cold chisel, but shatters when you really batter it.

To confuse myself even more, I've a pack of something Stubs-like with that black flux which gives a very similar spark, but is absolutely NOT stainless. Look just like the nickel rods, but with a different colour on the end of the electrode (The nickel are red, the unknowns come in white, yellow and purple. The purples are Stubs FN8 (I think).

Also Al- any ideas for analysing bronze rods? Got a bunch of them looking for labels too...

Lots of ally tig rods, lots of bronze oxy/acet/tig rods, stainless tig filler, lots of MMA's - Inconel, various tainless, Vodex, Stubs nickel and others unknown, Stubs lo-hi's, other Lo-Hi's, plenty 1.6 and 2mm 6013's, 6012's, three types of bronze MMA, some ally MMA, Hardfacing.... the list goes on and on.

I've actually managed to use some of them....

No that does sound like me, I bought 10 cartons of 7024s because they were a bargain ermmm on the list is of crap bought at auctions, 4 space heaters, a hundred or so O/A cutting nozzles, a good half ton of roller boxes, and turret extensions, 3 and 4 jaw chucks (can never resist), dividing heads qty off, a huge bag of earth clamps, Calv whit worth coach bolts (thousands), loads of nasty carbide tooling (WHY???), Co2 heaters, fifty filing cabinets, a heap of perforated plate........... I must stop........
