Fitting a lintel

Hi all

I am going to give it a go putting in a lintel. But I have a few questions

The guy how owned the house before me has put in lintel but not jacket it. So not 100% where it's is safe to do so.

I have patched up cracks as it was loose.

Can I just knock through both sides as its a cavity wall and us wood and jack either side ?

I would get a proper catnic cavity lintel
Best to remove all of the bricks above, get a few reclaimed ones to match.
Then rebuild it all properly. Make sure to bed the new lintel on mortar with at least 150mm bearing either side.
Support the roof structure from the inside with scaffold boards and acrow props.

I was going to buy to concrete ones. So I don't need to put anything through the wall just some across in the inside?

Dont worry I wasn't going to take it out before jacked inside. Aye they are both inside and ouy very badly done. There was another one like that. It was 8 foot wide mind you. So I got a real builder to do it.

Going get some props from builders next door.

To wee job for many builders and know I have got it in head want it done.

Shocking but It could have been a worse job if its any consolation :-)
I've got to do a doorway like that on a wreck of the house next door that we're using for storage that had been converted by a brit then abandoned, and on that the builder used expanding filler foam between stones and had about 5cm of bearing either side. On a mudfilled stone wall...
I would normally put needles with props either side, but as the blockwork above it already has the bond broken, I'd just prop support the roof where it sits on the wall and take out above that and rebuild as above. It will be miles quicker and more structurally integral after.
Are you redoing that pillar that is mismatched to the main wall too? as it goes out as it goes up, I think the chances that is tied correctly to the existing wall is somewhat remote and it might just be a pile of blocks in a pillar waiting to play jenga...

If you look at the picture you will see a triangle of bricks that have cracked out above the window. If you take them out the others will most likely support themselves to some degree like a cantilever effect. You would probably get away without propping the roof but put a couple of props inside with a length of 4x2 to be on the safe side. You could use the bricks from the inside leaf to make good and use newer ones inside where they will not be seen. Take the bodged bricks out from both sides and cut down with a Stihl saw to tidy the edges and make the hole square before you take the old lintel out it looks like it was for a bigger hole anyway. Nice pink barrow by the way

The wee out build seems to be pretty well build it used to be a house.

The barrow is the next door neighbour's.

Last thing so would it be a 65 x 100 liters be fine?

a good plan that's what I would do. those outer bricks have settled and mortar cracked .guy who did that must have been blind folded

Yes, the cavity lintel ties the inner and outer leaves together.
You can use concrete lintels if you want, but use 100*150 laid together as they will close the cavity due to their size

What would the problem be with closing that small part off cavity. Dampness?

Doesnt look too bad, least you got a lintel. I had an old round fence post in one, and an old leaf spring inside another home made concrete one. In a couple of weeks I shall be removing home made concrete ones from my barn too.

Id be knocking more of that inside plaster off too, just to see what the rest is like.

About 5 years ago I changed over 200 lintels for a housing association. They had all been cast in situ and the 'rebar' had rusted and expanded splitting them down the length of the lintel. I say 'rebar' because we found allsorts of offcuts of metal used, some angle from old beds, some metal broom handles etc...one 8' lintel had two 4' pieces of rebar butted together! To be fair it split down the length like the rest, not in half like you'd expect.
doing my job I come across all sorts of things like this, the notion that tradesmen of yesteryear all took pride in their work and did a proper job is a myth!

I think it looks ok for a first time. It is square though but doesn't look it on picture.so pleased with it. I now just need roller door. Them we are good to go

it doesn't top what I saw on a job a house I was working at had the floor dug up as the chimney and fireplace was cracking away they took it down and it was sat on an old rusty wheelbarrow upside down in the founds with no wheel on unbelievable

I recently changed a few lintels that had narrow gauge railway line as the reinforcement inside, seen quite a few that were a section of a tree branch usually left in the round and often not at all straight.
