A lot of what we do goes onboard ships, so easy craneage (not sure if that's a word!) is a definite plus.

How do you go about getting something a lifting ticket? I assume it undergoes either a load test or some sort of NDT?

A chap divides the weight of the item between the 4 lifting points, then puts a jack on each eye and applies a load and sees if it yields or not. If the yeild strength is 5 times higher than the weight each eye carries (I believe) then it passes.

Nothing to stop you self-certifying, if you are willing to accept the risk. Our old fitter used to load it +25%, check it for movement and issue a cert.
Most people use a professional service though, and I think that's best.

What is it you're looking to test, a load or a lifting accessory? No way in hell I would skimp on testing any lifting accessory, but we have some mini lifting bins with four big hangers that I'd comfortably do they only hold a ton but the loops are good for probably 15x that much.

I'm pretty sure if you put lifting points on something (especially an item available for hire to every tom dick and harry) then they need a test. Even if I just did it the once, I know it will pass with ease. The whole thing can't weigh more than 150kg and you'd sling that from just one loop without a worry but rules is rules.

If it's a load i.e. a piece of plant with fixed lifting points then there's no requirement but you might find it hard to get it craned on site depending on the contractor's own rules. Plenty of our plant had built-in lifting points and they are not tested.

If it's an accessory like chains, straps, shackles etc that actually attach the hook to the load then tested every six months is the law.

I made this today (well yesterday but I fitted it today). Just a bit of 12mm thick flat bar with a bit of pipe welded on the end and a bolt hole in the other, a rubber bung down the pipe to hold the jet tube to dampen vibrations and hooked it up to a diesel jetwash bowser.

It's for keeping the dust to a minimum when breaking out concrete. Site were so impressed with it they gave me a voucher for a free breakfast

Ooooh its not a Monty mate - ain't seen one of those in years. We only use Atlas Copco solid body breakers.

Done nearly 100 tons so far got another couple of hundred to go.

Admit I haven't been in the construction industry now for a long while. Not ground work anyway.. probably about 8 years ago.am sure a lot has changed now..

this morning I did a little bit of work on my lathe before I went to work. I needed to make a new spring loaded retaining pin for the barrel of the ignition lock for my Triumph Herald. I don't know how I managed to loose the original one. I would use a mug for scale but that would be lost, the drill in the picture is 3mm diameter.

I know people say get the biggest lathe you can, but sometimes its an advantage to have a smaller one.

I have made some really small stuff on my biggish lathes, especially on the CNC. Made a small spindle that was about 3mm in diameter with a ball of about 5mm diameter halfway along it. It was a part to repair the snapped one in the lathes own tailstock hydraulic valve Made 2 just in case I needed a replacement but it has been 10 years and the first one is still working, will have to see if I can find the spare and take a snap.
I did have a small CNC for a while, a Conect 121 I retrofitted but I never used it, much preferred to just do it on the big lathe.

Here's what I have been doing today.
Made another angled packer for the transducer that will go on the second of the two Cheetah Cats I am fitting out. This one is a different angle than the previous one as it is getting placed on a different part of the hull.

Also plasma cut some side plates for hanging blocks then milled the spindle hole on the Chiron. Plates are 16mm thick and turned out pretty good even thogh the steel was rusty and painted.

Now this is something I did NOT do. This was the shaft that was supplied with the rollers which will be in the hanging blocks (skipper bought them) I would be ashamed to put out a weld like that let alone charge for it.

If there's one part of fabrication I hate its grinding, this week I've made these exhibition display stands, tables from 50 x 50 x 3 rsa, and the flat shelves from 40 x 40, this is the finished job apart from the tops which the customer will deal with, unfortunately (because I don't like grinding) the customer wants it welded and all ground flush then left as is, apparently they call it the rustic look, and is fashionable at the moment, to me it just looks unfinished, all joints mitred then migged with full penetration welds then ground off, glad to see the back of them, my normally clean shop is now covered in a layer of black dust, did I mention I don't like grinding...

Nothing worse than a heap of grinding. Grinding dust gets everywhere..ruins my old woman's Dyson...
