Are cheap ebay blasting pots ok? And what size?

There's cheap pressurised blasting pots on 'bay for £60 (10 gal/38 l) and £85 for 20 gal 76l. Are the cheap ones like this ok? And what size should I use?

I have a chassis to blast but only bits of it need blasting, just where it's rusted around the joints.

They work fine, but you have to be a bit patient and they can be fiddly to set up. Look in the Compressed Air section, loads of info there.

The 20 gall ones can be a bit heavy when full, but last twice as long between fills as the 10 gall one. One advantage of the smaller one is that you have to fill them more often, this gives the compressor chance to have a rest between fills.

the smaller one fills with air faster .also change the blast jet to a carbide one if u are buying one

What size of compressor have you got? To run a 3mm blast nozzle you need at least a 14cfm air supply & it will be very slow to clean a chassis (think about colouring it in with a large marker!)

Ideally you need a road compressor which you could hire in for major projects.

then u would need a lager blastpot and jet to make full use of it put a blastpot with 3mm jet on a 90cfm compressor and it hardly gets of tick over

It's a 14 cfm 3hp 150litre compressor, basically as big as you can get in 240v.

The chassis is only about a third rusty so I'm hoping I'll manage it. The rest of it I will just sand down.

I've already ordered the 10 gal pot, as the 20 gal one looks too big to store afterwards.

I read the sand blasting article in the help section of this website. The author says he got through 350 kg of media to blast a small car. That's 14 bags, seems a lot.

theres a lot of waste when your running a pot at well under its full power. they really need running at 90psi constant 80 percent air and 20 pecent grit to get the cutting velocity

I read somewhere that they need to be converted for use with soda, is that right? I've got body panels to do and worried about using grit.

Someone said they need careful setting up. What needs setting up though?

never used soda its expensive but don't do panels with grit or fine sand even at lower pressures . it lets the stress out of the metal and warps them. bonnets are the worst

I was thinking of getting a mobile wet blaster to come down and do most of the work. They use 190 cfm compressors and can strip a body in a few hours. I'll only be touching up the bits they miss, you know what it's like when you get a pro to do something, they never quite pay enough attention to detail, so I expect I'll have nooks and crannies to correct.

I'm waiting for quotes for mobile wet blasting.

The cavities on my car are quite simple, so would I not be able to just hose out the media? The car is totally stripped down, so the interior can all be hosed.

As for stopping it rusting, I was going to dry it using a power drier and then put it in my insulated garage with a space heater and industrial dehumidifier.

The power drier is actually just a dog drier I use on my German shepherd, basically a powerful blower that also gives out some heat.

I bought an wet blasting attachment for my pressure washer & whilst it does a great job of cleaning rusty metal, the clean up afterwards is a nightmare. The sandy slurry gets everywhere including any nooks & crannies in what you're cleaning. You can get most of it out by washing it but of course you get instant flash rusting as it dries!
Unless you have a drier the sand can't be used again so the cost of media can be expensive. You have to use kiln dried sand at £3 for a 25kg bag & you will use a lot of it! At least with dry blasting you can reuse the media a few times.

Ha and there's all those YouTube videos saying wet blasting is the future.

Can dry media really only be used a few times? My last bag got recirculated in the blast cabinet about 30 times. By the end of it it had more dust than grit and used to kick up a huge cloud. Now I have a powerful extractor I thought that would extract the lighter dust and let me use the same grit forever ?

i am sure you could wash it out, i find blasted metal can go rusty over night without any water present so the thought of wet blasting cars has me baffled the media goes everywhere and as above the slurry it would create would be a nigtmare to clean up can see the council being happy with it just being washed down the drains. just my 2p worth not seen it done yet we media blast complete cars dry with no panel warping just has to be done right, and even then it can take hours to get all the media back out and we have a massive industrial hover

Thanks for the feedback. I was mislead! I've found a private garage that does soda blasting, the owner seems friendly and knowledgeable, I've asked him for a quote. He says he uses soda and then the heavy rust is removed with a more aggresive media.

Don't some of the wet blasters use a rust inhibitor? Sure I read that somewhere.
