had a full weekend in the Workshop

Massive tidy up, thrown away a lot of crap and made a tool rack for all my pliers and cutters.

Tested out the belt sander linisher some more, I'm well impressed with its capabilities

Fitted a green grinding ŵheel to an old motor I had, it's now an awesome carbide tool grinder.

......... Then I played with my lathe and melted some HSS tooling on a bar of SS

Lessons from this weekend are keep it tidy cause it's easier to find things, and HSS tooling doesn't work very well with SS

I can now go into the workshop and do things without having to find the workbench

It will be sensitive to getting the angles ground right, need the speed right and coolant applied, whereas tip tooling you can be much sloppier about speed, just a dab of RTD and get away with it.

Plus I don't drink coffee, only beer

It will be sensitive to getting the angles ground right, need the speed right and coolant applied, whereas tip tooling you can be much sloppier about speed, just a dab of RTD and get away with it.

To be honest, dad did tell me and I sort of know...... But the HSS tool was all set up and bar odpf SS was to hand.

Only found the RTD and coolant after the tool tried to show me nuclear fusion

Do you know what flavour of ss it was? It can be hard on tooling.
Had something similar yesterday.

Had a couple of spacer to machine for someone nothing critical they had a length of bar they would come out off.
I knew the blade was past it's best but wanted to get the job out the way before cleaning the saw and changing the blade.

50mm bar heavy pitting on surface unknown history, put it in the saw started the cut ok then the rate of cut slowed up till the point it just stopped cutting about 15mm in.
Ok time to change blade. But just out of interest i put a off cut of angle in and cut a few inches off, slow but cut just fine.

Changed blade and found some suitable material on the shelf. New blade was horrible kept jumping , had a look and it was out of alignment at the weld, dressed with the Dremel and it ran better but still not good.

Finished the job will see tomorrow if the new blade will cut the unknown bar this time.
Want to fit another blade any way.

The joys of unknown material have no idea what it could be, we cut tool steels no problem. Didn't want to dig the big power hacksaw out.

You were probably running the lathe too fast ata guess. HSS can work very well on stainless but needs to be set up. If it's 316 though, its tough on everything. I used to use a lozenge for a rough cut then a HSS tool for a fine finishing cut. Lozenges like a nice deep cut but HSS actually works better on a fine finishing cut.

If you would come and sort out my garage for me and I'd happily keep you in sozzled in beer, the only problem would be you'd be here that long that you'd make George Best look like a teetotaller.

Mines, not really been useable since the move at the end of last year.I'm off tomorrow and Wednesday and should bey it into a semi servicable state. The lathe still needs putting back togther too.
