Got the three Jaw chuck apart. I was expecting a lot of swarf but it was not that bad. Did find the cause of the clunky movement. Some rock hard grease.

That was a pita, even after soaking for hours the hard grease would not come off i had to use a pick.

In the second picture below the three bolts in the centre. How tight should these be? if i loosened them slightly it would be easier to turn the key.

Clocked in the piece of tool steel, 0.09mm run out (3.54 thou) is this ok?

I don't need one someone gave the wife a vibe n fold .

I don't know if agitating the water makes any difference, but i'm hoping that 6 hours continuos use will break it so i can put it by the bin .

I think i need a larger chuck key. Had another go with the tool steel, tightening as much as i can with this small key and holding the head stock in the other hand to stop it sliding on the bench. 0.065mm run out (2.55 thou).

3 Jaw chucks are not accurate, they are really meant if you are going to be turning the full length of the stock. If you need to chuck something accurately, for example I do propeller shafts for boats and need to turn a taper and thread the ends, the taper needs to be accurate to the shaft so I use an independent 4 jaw chuck to get true. Another method is using soft jaws and machine them to the correct gripping dia whilst under load, I use this method on the CNC.

Under three thou is quite acceptable for a three jaw. Once you've turned a diameter, this is true to the axis of the spindle, hence the reason you never remove a work piece from a three jaw until you've finished every operation. You'll never get it running true, even if you mark the piece relative to the chuck.

If think the agitation in the u/sonic thingy is much more vigorous, and you probably need to have heat too, iirc 80o or therabouts.

I put a wire wheel in bench grinder as i thought it would be hand for cleaning up the handles etc, the problem is that its out of balance and i'm afraid the grinder will self destruct. Is there a quality wire wheel i can buy that will fit without having to use the plastic inserts?

No there all quite poor, I dont bother any more too many brustles fly out of them and stick in where ever they hit.

The ones for angle grinders I find better but not much.

Mine shed bristles when it was new but now it doesn't it also runs a lot more smoothly now it's worn down somewhat. Deosn't seem to have done the bench grinder any harm and it's been on there 8 or 10 years.

I've taken the wire wheel off now, cant get the grinding wheel on one side to balance. Should have bought a better quality grinder.

It's the cheek plates. I re-made the ones on my grinder and now all the wheels run true. Those pressed steel plates are hard work to get a nice running wheel then you never want to take it off.
