I would definitely use coolant then, will help with the finish as well as extending tool life.
You will still get a mess but you can put a towel or something like that on the floor if you are particular, me I don't bother but my workshop is a mess anyway

IIRC there was a hole in the rear chip/coolant splash guard that maybe for the coolant hose?

It may have to stay in the garage for a while, the work cupboard is full and will struggle to get it in there. I could do with rigging something up so i could use the £4.50 hoist.

IF the lathe was 3 phase and converted to single phase it could be that the pump was disconnected because it requires 3 phase power. Don't despair though because you can probably make it run with nothing more than a capacitor on the spare leg.

On to the apron now.

Whats the best way to clean this up, complete strip down and scrub? Could i soak the entire piece in some degreaser?

I'd strip it. Three things to be aware of:

1) The screw in the centre of the clutch knob is left-handed.

2) The key that slides along the lead screw to provide surface and facing feed has a pin rivetted into it which locks the threaded retaining collar for the drive worm (centre top picture).

3) There is a detent pin running through the apron body that prevents you engaging both surface/facing feed and the half nuts. Make sure you mark which end is which as, in my case, I found it wasn't interchangeable end-for-end.

Reassembling the clutch is a bit of a fiddle, but I'm sure you can work that out.

But what about the "if its not broke, dont fix it methodology." Over the years I have seen more things damaged by people fixing them, than I have, that have actually damaged themselves.

Nothing wrong with the bucket of degreaser idea, though petrol or parafin is cheaper!

Each to their own. You could say it's clean enough use as is. If nothing is sticking then why not? I just like taking things apart and cleaning them before use.
