Car breakdown Insurance

My 5 year warranty finishes in March along with my free RAC breakdown cover which luckily I have never needed, long gone are the days of fixing a car with whatever fit's in a rusty cantilever toolbox...so

I have had an 'offer' of 2 years RAC cover, the full courtesy car, hotel if required etc etc, for £130, not sure where they would find the courtesy car at 2am though.

My main concern with cover is the holiday drive during the early hours, usually between midnight and 4am, any other trip I don't mind sitting around for a while, sitting around on the way to catch a flight could obviously be a disaster.

I did a gocompare wotsit and got some silly prices below £17 a year from firms I have never heard of in my life and it concerns me they are some hillbilly with a battered transit and trailer who would turn up within a week or so..perhaps

What's everyone else using, cost, good or bad experiences or anything else worth knowing before I decide what to get.

Can't fault the RAC, been with them 20+ years and probably used them half a dozen times for car and bike. About 5 years ago Mrs Robo couldn't start her car to go to work so phoned them, we don't have home start but as we'ed been members for so long they came out and sorted the problem

Is the price they are offering me sound about right?

For two years, it's £75 a year normally so a bit of discount offered.

sounds good to me i rarly call them out but pay 110 for a year to cover 3 people i think this is why i get a good deal like im sure you will as if i get a puncture i will do myself just if i break down miles from home i want the relay realy

you can get cheaper but most will be an insurance policy eg brake down pay to have you sorted and send off a claim they them refund your money less a small amout

every few years the price goes up i just call aa and swap as they give a good price untill the price gets to high then ring rac few years later and swap back when they give the price i want

with the rac when they send a renewal through the post,its normally about 25% more expensive than to take a new policy out online. here is the renewal price compared to the price for a new customer (from about 3 or 4 years ago) for the same level of service.

Cheers folks, initially it looks like I am getting a decent offer.

Probably an introductory offer because they know my Hyundai 5 years free is up and they will try to hit me with a rise after the two years, peace of mind however is worth the price I suppose and nothing compared to a distance recovery in the event of a breakdown.

I think we pay about £110 for joint membership of rescue & recovery.

We are with the AA, under £100 for myself and the wife. Cover is for any car we are in, don't have to be owned by us. Original quote was £160, told them to take a jump and they dropped it

You must have one of the last ones, what model is it, my last one was a MK5 Ghia .

I have green flag mayday cover, that covers me for the caravan as well though, think its in the region of £60-£70 a year.
